I've had some luck using a slip bobber setup and drifting a minnow over the top of the brush, but have not come up with any other good ideas. The young ones just get hung up too much. My youngest loves to fish, and she wants to go "crappie fishing" with me. I usually take her to fish for sandies or juglining...fun and easy fishin. I think it's time to get her on the "piles". Anyone have any successful ideas?

Try fishing bridge columns. Not much to hang up on unless someone has put out a condo. You can make your own condos out of pvc and sink them. Hard to sink a hook into pvc.

How old is your youngest? Little man is 8 and has no issue fishing a pile. teach em young, or buy more hooks and jigs

You can try downsizing the size of the hook...a hook with a smaller gap. That's what I do with my sons...they have been fishing brush with #6 hooks, and the hookups are a lot less.

You can work on developing the "feel" for getting loose from hangs. Usually if not "yanked" and pulled into the brush too tight, it can be worked free.
I used to "make a game" out of getting out of hang ups without having to retie with my daughter and now with my grandson. Getting a rig back from a bad hang up can be almost as rewarding as catching a fish (it's all about how you approach it) Be creative and patient. "Hang Ups" are just part of Crappie Fishing. Keeping the fun in it is the key..
There are some weedless options for jig heads. Some good and some bad. You might experiment to see what works for you..
Hope this helps

I use a split shot about 4-6inches above the hook and set the depth above the pile then hand it to them. Still gets hung up, but as long as I set the depth its not as bad....now if anybody has found a way to keep them from creeping up right beside me and getting hung in the trolling motor i'm all ears

maybe try a drop shot rig with a bell sinker abt a foot from the first jig, tie two jigs on abt a foot apart. maybe try some tube jigs also. Tube jigs dont come unseated off of the hook, as easy as regular solid body hooks do. and with two jigs fishing at different depth, it will insure she is always somewhere near the strike zone. Have her let line out until the bottom bell sinker just hits the brush, then reel up one crank and hold it still .
COMING SOON! .. THE STICKLE HOOK " the stay level sickle hook". sits level in the water with all knots.! Provides better hook sets and more natural jigging motion. No more adjusting the knot, gluing , or tying loop knots that cause the hook point to tangle in the loop, or worse knick the line.. The jighook that will make all others obsolete !

Weedless jighead would be another option. MO My brother and I have gone to using these all the time, unless fishing with Custom Hand-Tied Jigs. Hook a minnow through the lips, or get her started on plastic baits. Works great for us. keith
