I have been slowly transitioning to using the largest hooks I can get away with when flipping and pitching with caution as to not affect the bait's action too much or to overpower the line size. I am talking single hook baits here and not trebles. I just feel like I see more fished hooked better when I use a bigger hook. I read a post a few weeks back where a guy is saying he is doing the opposite with better results. Granted I don't think either us is wrong or right as its more about personal preference. I am curious to see what others are doing.

I use 5/0 on just about all my worms. Mainly bc I'm to lazy to switch my hook though.
Gama 5/0 for me!

I'm with you. The smallest hook I'm using now days is a 3/0 my averaged is 4/0 and ill throw a 5/0 or 6/0 on flukes and senkos. I won't even buy 1/0 or 2/0 any more. I want as much hook in their mouth as I can get away with when they pick it up.

Let me preface this by saying that I am not a professional nor am I a big trail fisherman. I have been fishing since I was 4-5 years old and I am now 60. I have transitioned from small to larger and now I am going back to the smaller hooks but using the xtra wide gap hooks and do feel I get better hookups and catch more fish without losing any size of fish. I believe that the baits have more action with the smaller hooks. The largest hook that I use is a 5/0 for senko/fluke type baits. My hook adjustments are heavy to light wire depending on the type of bait.

The main place i have seen it make a difference for me is carolina rigging. About a 3 months ago I made a trip with my partner and he was out catching me 3 to 1 throwing the same setup on his c-rig as me but using a 3/0 hook vs my 5/0. Besides c-rigging, I will throw the largest hook I can get away with. I hope I didnt stray from your question.

I just try and match the bait size as much as possible. If I'm throwing a Baby Brush Hog, 5 inch Senko, or C-Rigging a ring fry, or similar bait, I throw a 3/0. It fits the bait better and does not affect the action as much. Full size Brush Hogs, bigger Senkos, 10" worms get a 4-5/0. 4 inch Senkos or finesse worms get a 2/0.

To me the size of the hook is determined by what the fish is telling you. If there hitting it on the fall i will go with a smaller hook. If they want it on the bottom i will go with the larger. I believe that the smaller hook will allow better action with the bait. On craw baits i like the hook to penetrate about 1/4 inch from the end. I feel fish are attracted to the claws so i get my hook as close to them as possible. With drop shot i will throw 1/0 or 2/0 there again depending on the fish. Worm fishing i vary between 3/0 to 5/0. I hope this helps.

I use the smallest hook I can get away with. Rarely do I use 3/0 mostly it's 2/0 or 1/0. I went through the pool que wellrope winch thing a long time ago before some of you were born. I remember when ya had to rock da boat on hook sets now the hooks are so sharp just a slight pull is all thats needed. I use the drag on my reels for their intended purpose and don't use more than 12lb test it don't matter to me if the fish gets off my time on the water is for relaxation not bragging rights.

In this case smaller is better. As long as your not sacrificing hook stregnth. Owners seem to be the best when I want a smaller profile hook yet dont want to lose strenght when im using line above #12.

I don't think you can take a blanket approach to hook size. It has more to do with the shape and thickness of the plastic. Technique also weighs in on the hook used. For example, I use a big 4/0 or 5/0 EWG type hook for flipping tubes but on baits like beavers or speed craws, I use a 5/0 straight shank. If there is a lot of plastic to ball up on the hook, then big hooks are a must. If the bait is thin, then a smaller hook is okay. The exception to this for me is c-rigging. I almost always use a 2/0 or 3/0 EWG because I just seem to hook up better with one. The other thing to think about is when you set the hook, you want enough hook that its going to grab something on the way out. Kind of like boat anchors, you want it to grab a hold and stick. Fish don't care what your using so use what you have confidence in.

I always use the wide gap hooks. 3 sizes matched with the baits.
3.0 smaler baits like 7 inch power worms.
4.0 medium baits like beavers.
5.0 larger plastic baits like brushhogs.

I throw a 4/0 or 5/0 on flukes,senkos,craws,beavers..I use a 2/0 or 3/0 when throwing wacky finesse worms or smaller c-rig baits. Size and thickness of plastic/line dictates size of hook for me.

I like 5/0 hooks myself if I can get away with it. Generally when I'm fishing I'm fishing for 5+ lbers. Big hooks for big fish. If I'm fishing a lake that has smaller fish I will go down to a 3/0. I use a 1/0 for dropshotting.
