There are two areas where you will be able to catch crappie from the bank. The marina has a lighted handicapped fishing pier which has deep water and brush piles. Directly across on the east side of the lake is another pier, but it is a bear to get to. It is about a 1/4 mile walk from the parking area to the pier over a rough trail. Later in the season it will be the better pier.

Check out the map of the park.

The big blues are caught in the cove between the Live Oak and Plateau areas in the winter. In the summer the area in front of the boat ramp yields some monsters.

If you have a boat the second cove on the right from the marina is also good. There is a pier there but it is a hike to get to it straight down the hill.

Just my thought but all of the piers are good for crappie during the winter but some of them are quite a hike down (and then back up).
I kayak here during the late spring and always catch some around the piers but also around the oil rig thing and up in the coves.
I cheat, I use minnows, but my wife uses jigs and lures and catches some but not as many.
Have tried but have not caught a single cat from Mineral Wells.

I fished it yesterday. We covered the whole lake and fished hard. the lake looked like chocolate
milk. We threw chart. Colorado bladed spinnerbaits, and flipped dark colored plastics in flooded
brush and timber. All to no avail. Will try again soon.

San Diego has a rich fishing tradition, including a former thriving tuna fleet long gone. While most of us associate fishing here with deep sea fishing, San Diego County has a freshwater system of lakes ideal for all anglers. If you want lake, I will suggest you the Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley. Both dams are spilling water due to heavy rains upriver coming thru the lakes. Kentucky Lake has been spilling water. The choice is yours.
