My carpet on my boat trailer skids is wearing thin. Where is the best place to get replacement carpet for the skids? What kind of carpet should one get? Should I take the old carpet off? ...or should I just put the new carpet on top of the old carpet? Thanks! cm

Lowes or Home Depot has some marine carpet. Take the old carpet off and only cover the top and sides with the new carpet, NOT the bottom.

Now, Donald...please pick John Bolton for your running mate.

Measure your boards , Buy new ones & cover them . Go to lake put boat in the water tie it off then take off old ones put on the new ones . Then you can recover the old ones for the next time .

Bass Pro has precut carpet in a few different colors for bunk boards, just measure all the boards you have for a total length then order, or pick up the carpet you need. I'd replace the wood as well, just get marine grade 2 bys and rubber cement, then like bella said, cover the wood, launch your boat and install bunk boards then go fishing, since your boat is already in the water... OR you can pay someone a couple of hours to do the work for you, at least that's what North Texas Marine was gonna charge me.

I forgot, you'll need some staples (stainless steel if you can find them)

Give a look at HDPE bunks . Easy to work with no wood to rot.

bella has the right idea. That's what I did and it was really easy.

Bought the treated wood and carpet and at Home Depo and prepared them both in my garage. Took the boat to Hubbard, launched and pulled the trailer under a tree for shade and replaced both runners in about 30 minutes.

Got real lucky as the trash men were picking up just as I finished and they hauled away my old runners, carpet and all.

If u wanna work on em at home and have a floor jack.Just jack the side of the boat off the board on each side.,worked for me.Also make sure u get boards that are pretreated for water, unless u wanna treat them yourself.

Fishnfool_jd - thats how I did mine- didn't have to hurry and do it all at once..
anytime I try to do anything at a ramp, HUNDREDS of people come by to tell me their way to do it..

Yes, I thought about doing mine in the garage too but going to the ramp and launching the boat meant that I could get in a couple of hours chunkin' after I got the trailer finished.
