I would be a litte nervous about a big cat hitting your rod. I have seen 40 lb cats hit a rod and they destroy it. I trust steel. 2cents

If the drag is set at say, 10 lbs, why does it matter how big the fish is that hits? Shouldn't only 10 pounds of force be exerted on the rod holders?

I use a PVC setup too. I'm not really worried at all about it getting broken. I could be naive though. I made mine removable by permanently attaching a 1 1/4 inch pipe to the inside wall of my pontoon. It's the same height as the pontoon wall. Then a 1 inch pipe slides in. But I have two risers that make up a 5-rod holder. The cross pipe is 1 1/2 inch. The actual rod holders are 4 inch pipe cut like this. I made them adjustable by cutting a slit instead of a hold and use a wind nut so I can adjust by hand. They aren't bee readys, but they only cost me less than $50 for 18 (4 in each of the back corners and 5 in the front corners...or whatever b/c they are interchangeable). I know this must be hard to imagine so if anybody actually cares, I could take some pics.

I am still testing but have caught really nice fish on them. Just from testing I'm pretty sure my rod would break before PVC! I'll let you know how it goes. Plus I have seen bee ready snap too!

Don't get me wrong bee ready is an excellent product but just like a good rod every thing has a breaking point!

Nice, but i would paint them if you want them to last longer. Sun light will eventually make the pvc pipe weaker.
