My tach. stop working on my 1997 125 Mec I think my Volt. REG went out how can I test it?

When you turn the key to the "on" position, the needle on the tack shoud point to "0". If it doesn't, you have lost power to the tach. If it does point to "0", then 99.44% it is the voltage reg/rectifier. this is a simple replacement and shouldn't cause the average guy any problem to replace. Just remove it and carry it in to your local repair shop and they will test it for you and they will be able to order a new one.....

Hey boatman is this the same on a 94 johnson 115hp ? sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't now sometimes when I start it the volt meter needle swings back and forth and I get continious alarm. I turn it off and restart it everything is ok

ok. i have a tach issue also. 97 MERC 150 . TACH is bounceing all over and sticking? same issue ?

Some of the older rectifiers can be bench tested, the newer voltage regulators can't be bench tested. It is best to take the boat and motor to the service facility for testing. Mike is correct is saying that the most common failure for tachometers are related to the rectifier or regulator.

Seems to be the week for tach problems. Mine went out the other day. I have a 99 johnson 225. Where is the rectifier/reglutor. I followed wires from tach to a wire harness w/ 8 wires. is this it?
