They have made a lot of improvements since the nightmares with the lower units. It is easier to sell a merc or yam but if you are planning on keeping it a while that shouldn't be a huge issue.
As far as your XS question...on the same setup it won't run with a Pro XS top end but not too far off.

2009 ETEC 250. About 150 hours with no problems except for one that was my fault (bent prop shaft.)

26 pitch, awesome prop, and you'll get a nose bleed from the bow lift .. at least on a Z520, this hull design generally gets quite a bit of lift

You will like the ETEC, as I mention and others also it is a little hard to prop out, and I don't think the rakers are a very good match for the M2 LU. I run a 27 pitch fury so far the best I can find, Fury's down side is a little lack of lift, other that that is is probably the best 3 blade for the M2.
My fury is superb out the hole and mid range, hits 6000 rpm fairly regular so really need to repitch plus not quite as much lift as i would like but when I get some money it will go to Steve he tweeked a 26 fury for me and made it perfect. I run a 21' Stratos EVO., On Falcon this weekend 80 degrees, did 74.3 mph with two people 3/4 water in live wells, 30 lbs of bass, 20 gals fuel, no wind. GPS munbers (I weigh 250 partner is 190). So speed is not bad

I have a 2009 250 and love mine. I've owned every major brand and they all have their pluses and minuses. Thought I'd check out an Evinrude because I had run in a few and liked the quiet ride. As was stated above, not real popular in North Texas but the only way to change that is for folks like you and me to try them out and see for ourselves. Did have my lower unit replaced as others have stated and other than that, zero problems. Evinrude took care of the l/u and I've been rollin ever since. I think you'll really like it should you decide to purchase that Legend.

For me it was the worst mistake I ever made. The first powerhead blew a few months out of warranty. Evinrude paid for powerhead, I had to pay for labor. A little over a grand down the drain. Less than a 100 hours later, powerhead blew again. Computer didn't show a reason for it blowing, and the techs could not find a reason for it blowing. Started tearing apart my Ranger looking for anything, cracks in gas tank and all kinds of [censored]. Evinrude only offered to pay for 1/2 the powerhead and I cover labor again. Anyway finally got the problem resolved with some help from Ranger. When I traded the boat, I took a beating on the trade value. I dealed everywhere from Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Texas. Same story everywhere...A boat with a Evinrude will not sell, like a boat with a Merc or Yamaha (each dealer said that was true, blown heads or not). Heard the same story everywhere of how the Rudes would sit on the lot forever. Just a bad reputation. So from my experience, don't expect much on the resale with an Evinrude. It was quiet and strong while it ran though. It just cost me a ton of money.

I am not a big fan but I think you better buy all of the extended warranty you can on any of the new outboards and "O" by the way, I guess you know, you will have to change your handle BlackSkeeter. Get a ethanol tester for your boats fuel and use it. I am hearing of some rediculas results of up to 30% so you ca`nt be too carful.
