I saw this and thought I'd pass the link on to my fellow fishermen. This would be a good device to have on hand during those afternoon fishing trips in the summer.

Save yourself $70 and get an AM transistor radio. Tune it to white noise, and then if you hear static popping noises that is lightning.

Pretty nifty gadget. The site is informarive, but it says it can be affected by gasoline engines.

Just my luck, my Yammie is powered by gasoline!!

Wonder why it would cause interference?

I've always heard that lightening can strike something from as far awasy as 40 miles. If that's the case, then you could potentially get struck by the time the gadget alerts you that there is a storm moving in. Does anyone know how far away lightening can strike an object?

Lightning gives of RF (Radio Frequncys)and so does all ignition systems. Therefore AM radios can receive lightning noise.

I saw on the Weather Channel a while back on a report on lightning that the record strike was a traveled distance of around 150 miles !!! Right here in Texas too !

I just hold the tip of my rod up in the air and if I can hear it buzzing then I know that it is time to get off the lake or move to another area of the lake. Last year a storm was 15 miles away with clear sky over me and the rod was buzzing. We kept fishing but I felt uncomfortable about it.

Any time you feel uncomfortable on the water due to the weather it's time to come off the water. What ever method you use to detect approaching storm's pay close attention to it and don't push your time. Keep one thing in mind, there is alway's another day. Be Safe. you will never regret that. It's no fun getting caught in a hail storm in an isolated area either.
