I purchased a LCX-18C demo unit. They gave me a transom mount transducer with temp sensor. I also received a speed sensor. Since this unit has GPS, is there any reason why I would want to install the speed sensor?

Would be your choice . Might be handy if you did some trolling at slow speeds . You could watch your RPM"S and probably do the same thing.

I wouldn't do it, it's only a couple of button clicks to get to your Gps speed and two less holes in your boat. The speed sensor isn't accurate anyway. Your going to love that unit though.

Now you get to shop for the chips for area lakes that you can put into it.

stick with the GPS, don't bother with the speed sensor... like K. Neal said, the GPS is much more accurate anyway ..

I have the 18c and it is an awesome unit. Once you get it setup, minus the speed sensor, there is a setting for data to be shown on the screen. I selected speed as one of the pieces of data that stays on the screen. I have water temp, speed, local time, battery voltage. You will love the unit.

I know that the die hard fisherman that the walleye guys are, want go fishing without the speed sensor. Striper guys like them as well. These guys have a use for them as they use the screen for every detail for looking for fish and structure.

While I worked up north I got to mess around with many of these guys that have this fish finder stuff to a fine art form LOL.

They found that some of the more finicky fish while trolling want the bait at lets say 2.5 mph today and yesterday they was biting at 3 mph troll and the day before they wanted 7 mph and not any speed slower or faster each day. Sure the GPS gets that detailed and all but is not that quick of a reaction time for them to keep the steady 2.5 or whatever they find the fish to want for that day. At least that is what they explained to me on how this all works for them.

So all I am saying here is that the speed sensor for the slower trolling and all is going to be a quicker reaction time for some types of fishing, this leaving all the resolution on the screen for more structure and fish finding too, instead of splitting off the screen.

This all may not matter for most of the bass fisherman. I know I would be for putting it own if this was my rig, just make sure to mount all the transom mounted senders and sensors as well as the X-ducers on the portside of the motor and at least 12" from the center line of the boat. At least on the more performance running rigs, this keeps the water cleaner and not disturbed so bad where the prop gets its bite of the water to push and lift the boat while running at or near WOT...
