Ok here I go again! Just bought my first real boat, it is a 78 16' with 90hp merc. It runs-then don't run-then runs. Iam starting to get "mad" and was wondering what size motor can I put in place of the 90hp? Idon't want to go any larger since I am unsure of the transom strength. Would I be ok to run a 70hp and still be able to get around ok (don't want to break any speed records just be able to cross the lake in less than a day!) Also what would be a good price for a used motor?
The boat is a 78 dynatrack 16'

Hey Home_built,
If your engine just quits all of a sudden, your problem may be in the harness that plugs into the side of the engine. Over time and use, the wires inside that harness and on the engine corode from the inside out. They become very brittle. As a marine tech, we call this Merc-ittis. A common problem on older engines.
Start the engine, and turn the wheel back and forth, all the way. Next move that harness around a bit and see if the motor dies. If it does, That's your problem.
Hope this helps,
Capjun

I will give it a try in the morn. These things sure do get you mad at times. This is the first time I took it out on the water, ran great on the trailer and on the way out of the launch area, then poof-- good thing I had my tusty trolling motor with me. Thanks for the info
