I had my motorguide trolling motor on the highest speed cruising down a bank and then it just stopped working no response from the prop at all when I pressed the foot pedal, all my electrical in my boat is fine however it did trip my breaker on one of the trolling motor batteries but I reset it and tried it but it still didnt work never had this happen before, when I got home I placed my hand on the motor itself and burned my hand and poured some water on the motor and it boiled, the motor was extremely hot...All the electrical in my boat checks out fine so I am guessing my trolling motor shorted out inside the motor itself and melted all the gears and so forth inside, seeking some insight if this is what I think it is that my trolling motor just died or something else thanks

You didn't say which Motorguide you have. Repair cost vary depending on which one you have. If it's a 5-speed, look at the wires under the footpedal and in the top (head), to see if they are melted together. If they are, you may be able to separate them and put some insulation shrink. Also, if it's a 5 speed, the comcap/speed coil may be burnt. Still a fix for usually less than $175.00. I wouldn't buy a new one until you get an "cost to fix" estimate. John

its a motorguide brute 56lb 24v 5 speed, I have a 19' blazer bass boat, the trolling motor came with it when i bought the boat a year ago this trolling motor was way underpowered for my boat just never had the $ to upgrade, I went ahead and ordered a larger trolling motor, anyways I checked the foot pedal all the wires are fine i will take a look inside the head and check it out...I would like to still get it fixed and sell it

I'm guessing you will find burned wiring in the head, that would be what caused the breaker to trip. Possible the comcap/speed coil is burned, but I would look at wiring first.

took the head apart, the white wire was slightly burned and melted, took the prop off and opened the motor up and there was black residue every where and a burnt smell, couldn't open it all the way without having to disconnect all the wires but they did look like they got extremely hot and burned

That's going to be a burned speed coil. On the 5speed, you replace the entire end cap. comes with brushes, wires and speed coil already made inside. Sells for around $90.00. Labor to replace if done by a service center is around 3/4 hour. John

The reason I said it was fried is because I have been down this road before. Started chasing those green fish in 1970, might have seen and done a few things in this time frame. Yes I do have a trolling motor for sale if he decides to purchase a new one. I can and will save someome alot of money if a new one is needed. If he can get it fixed for a small amount , then that is great and the way to go. Anyway my tm is too under powered for the rig BassAg is running. Nice fish in your picture Mr. Opus. Everybody have a great day and tight lines. Not trying to step on anyones toes.
