I think it may still leave a slight residue behind, which can be cleaned with a mild solvent like wd40. Problem is getting it to just peel up......

I can tell you that certain kinds hold well. My compass has been in my Skeeter since 1996 and has never fallen off. But I've also heard that certain silicones mess up the glass too.
