I have been doing a little crappie fishing on the North Bosque that flows into lake Waco. I know the area that I am fishing has to hold sunnies. It is full of brush and great cover. However, If I don't catch a crappie, I don't catch anything. This is a well known location and you sometimes have to fight for a spot, but I never see anyone catching sunnies. We all use jigs and crappie nibbles, which I have caught bluegill and greenies on before. I just have been wondering why no one ever catches them?

Sunnies tend to move into deeper water during the winter and they also for the most part are not very active. There are exceptions "Just look at Lake Dunlap". When fishing for the Sunnies during the winter months fish slow from the buttom and deep. Look for sunken structure and drop offs. I have been catching em on Dunlap in 6 to 10 feet of water next to drop offs. The water temp on Dunlap is at a nice 64 degrees. Also you may want to try hitting a few creeks. There are less insects and snakes to worry about and the fish seem a little easier to find on a creek. Good luck.

You can catch em up there in North Texas, the bite has just slowed down during the winter months and colder water. Like I say fish slow and deep and try to find sunken structure and drop offs. Also remember the Sunnies are less active during the winter months.

I've thought the same thing. I'm in Amarillo , go freeze my [censored] off and can't catch squat in the same ponds I'll catch 20 to 30 sunnies the rest of the year.

Usually in extrem cold weather Sunnies in small ponds are in active and hardly bite. In deeper lakes and rivers fish deep and slow.

They all migrate to Dunlap LOL J/K
On a serious note If there are any deep holes on the creek or river, fish them hard, just let your bait seat for a second or two then hop it, and let it seat again. if they are there they will come an get it

Thanks for all of your help. I guess the crappie can just handle the cold water a little better then? This is a creek/small river, so the sunnies must be there...I don't think they would have migrated all the way back to the lake. I'll try some of the deeper holes and fish a little slower with some worms. The water is probably about 50 degrees here.

As already said fish deep and slow while fishing lakes and rivers. As for the creeks logs piles or at the end of some current.
