Blowing a hole in a pistion is done because the motor detonated. This could be caused for several reasons. One, bad timing, two, bad fuel, three, bad carbs, four, wrong prop. Did you see the piston? Did it have a hole in it. Some times mechanics use the hole in the piston as a generic term. If the cylinder is scuffed bad it will seem that the piston has a hole in it. If it is scuffed there are other reasons for that. But, in either case you will be looking for a rebuild for your engine. Micheal

larry, blown piston? this is a generic answer to your problem. let me explain to you why pistons get a hole in them. number 1- mechanical, something gets into cylinder, could be a piece of the skirt broken off of the piston, or a needle bearing from the rod / crank connection, piece of the reed valve getting into the cylinder. these are possible, because with age, parts become warn, and the likely hood, of the piston skirt breaking or something is higher. but not likely!!!!
number 2- fuel related the reason you "burn" holes into a piston, is because of extreme cylinder temperatures. it is pretty simple. a two stroke engine is very dependent on fuel to air ratios. as you know, the more air you get into a fire, the hotter it burns. "holes" are typically caused by a "lean condition" (too much air in the fuel / air ration) this can be caused by out of tune carbs, or various other maintenance issues. if you do in fact have a hole in a piston, this would be my guess as to the culprit of your problem. advantage marine in sachse is an excellent shop for your marine service, he will work with you on your problem and give you honest answers. tell joe, that daniel sent ya' !!!!!
