My friend has a 1999 225 merc, he put it in used it fishing today and put it in gear but it did not engage. We can see the cable moving so the problem is not in the cable. I am not familiar with lower units but his is very well maintained and never made any noise. It just happened all of a sudden. Any ideas? Thanks.

Could be several things. If it`s clicking trying to engage it needs a cable adjustment. If anything else you need to take to a Merc mechanic. Hope it is something simple because it shure can get expensive. Have guy that rebuilds the Merc lowers for 1000.00 with 1 year warranty a really good deal. Good Luck
