Am leaving Saturday am for 5 days of fishing on Lake Falcon. This will be my first time ever to this great lake. Any input would be helpful. I plan on launching at State Park the first day. My PB is only 7.5 and I hope to better it and perhaps join the DD club.

If you are there for 5 days and listen to James at Lake Falcon Tackle you will beat your pb for sure!

Good luck.

Whether you think you can or you can't, you are probably right.

Lake is fishing tough for the most part. Sure there have been some nice fish caught of late, but trust me unless you stumble on a magic hump or ledge (which some have) its going to take some work. Fishing the dam is a great confidence building place to start and there are certainly nice fish there. Expect a crowd on Saturday.(Champs pre-fishing) A lot of folks are throwing DD22's and 3/4 - 1 oz jigs. My 10.13 a few days ago came off a DD22, but for the most part I am having success with sloooooowly dragging a ball and chain through rocks and scattered trees. If you catch a fish somewhere, STAY and fish that spot with everything you have.

GL out there

love how it's usually people that have never been to Falcon that talk about how easy the lake is....

I agree and I really like it when "10 lbs or bust", and people like him, tells it like it is. Falcon can be as tough to fish as any lake out there. On the other hand, if you find the fish, it can and will be the most fun you've had in a long time. All it takes is 6, 6 lbers on 6 consecutive casts and you're hooked on Falcon.

Like me for what I am, or don't like me at all.

I appreciate the input...as long as fish can be caught cranking I am sure I can find some. Never really fished jigs though, but do have one tied on and ready. Will stop by Lake Falcon tackle first thing when we arrive Saturday late afternoon. Are licenses (Texas and Mexico) available at most places there?

Yep, made my first trip down there last week and was humbled. A few rats and a monster crappie was all I had to show for the 8 hour drive. Going to give it another shot but it's not a magic lake, keep realistic expectations and you'll have a better time.

That's were I found most of the few fish I caught and it was packed. Be sure you do get the Mexico license because it's very easy to stray into Mexican waters if you fish near the big overflow tower. The only place I found the Mexican license was at Lake Falcon Tackle, they do not sell them at the state park or at the other tackle shop. Be a good idea to call first.

One other suggestion, I stayed at the State Park and won't be doing that again. There is nothing resembling civilization within about 30 miles of the state park. Stay in Zapata if you want to be close to restaurants, gas, decent lodging, etc.

Hell if I caught 2 6lbs on consecutive cast then I'd be hooked

If you ain't first you're last.

8 hours of driving for a crappie and a few dinks, hmmmmmmm ..

I am 55 min from being in the water at Fork and rarely have days like that on Fork. What a decision, to drop a lot of gas $$$ to "hope" the fish are biting on Falcon.

Are the guides doing any better right now? I rarely see any good posts from guides down there...

I was there last week and everyone at our hotel had atleast one amazing day some whacked them all week. A few of the guys went with guides, 3 different ones, and they all had close to 40 lbs each trip. Once we figured out the fish, we were able to pattern them all over the lake. They were definitely grouped up on small spots.

Don't use my trip as an example, I generally can't catch a cold even if I was fishin' in my boxers! smile

I obviously never found one of those small hot spots and to be honest didn't take the time to give the lake a fair shake, plus I did try to get some intel from the tackle shops and other places but got nothing more than the same vague general stuff you get here from the forum. Maybe I just caught those folks on a bad day, I do plan on going back and spending the money for a guide (which is basically what the tackle shop encouraged me to do anyway when I asked for help).

I have been to Falcon a bunch of times. First time I went was a couple years ago with my son and his partner to pre fish for an upcoming college tourney. We had never seen the lake before. The only thing we knew about the lake was to to try one of the chicken fried steaks covered with gravy and cheese! We were like most people, thought we could find them ourselves. It's Falcon, fish are everywhere. We struggled for the first day. Met up with some guys from Arkansas that fished it every year. They really helped with locations, what to look for etc. I went in FLT and talked to James. He sold us some big dingers, some D22s, and some Yo Baby jigs. Picked out the right colors and everything. We went back out the next day ready to go! My son and his buddy doubled up on a couple eights in Pierce's cove! I still had not caught anything to speak of. The last day we started to just load up and head home. It's an eight hour drive. My son talked me into going out for a couple hours. We put in at Oso and headed north a little ways. He stuck a five pounder on a Carolina rig. I was throwing a jig that James had picked out for me. I stuck a 9lb 12oz pig and had a memory of a lifetime! We were back at the ramp before 9:00am. I'm hooked forever on Falcon. Never give up and never underestimate what you can catch down there. It is a great lake, but it is still fishing. I've been back many times, had days of over a hundred fish by myself! Had sacks of best five over 45lbs. I'll keep going as often as I can. Biggest problem is getting someone who can go when I can!
