I bought a boat that what I thought was a good deal but unfortuanetly the boat needs alot of repair which is out of my budget. So now im going to sell it and wanted to know what would be better to get either a kayak or a one man pontoon? Any help would be greatly appreciated? thank you.

For the price of some kayaks and one man pontoons I would just find a flat bottom.

For the price of some kayaks and one man pontoons I would just find a flat bottom. +1 on that. If you watch craigslist close you can pick up some older but perfectly good boats for about the same money (even less sometimes) than a kayak or a one man pontoon. What type of repairs does your boat need?

A kayak is still useable in winter if you are careful. The pontoons usually have you airing the water, and that would not be pleasant with 40 degree water. I would look for a nice wide flatbottom boat.

Six years ago, I became frustrated at waiting in line at the boat ramp, ongoing expense keeping the motor running, periodic battery replacement for the trolling motor, boat and trailer registration etc....and started looking a Kayaks on the internet and doing some research. My wife took the matter in hand and reminded me that if I was going to get a Kayak I had better do it while I could still paddle. So at 60 YOA I made the leap and purchased one for $450.00 and sold my Bass Boat three weeks after my first fishing trip in my "Yak". I have never looked back and now fish normally twice per week as a retiree (still out of my first and only Yak). Have never turned over (Turtle) YET; and fish the year around wearing Neopreen waders during the winter. Being towed by a large fish in a Kayak is a real rush. Have a mounted Depth Finder and break away anchor with a float on the rope and have missed my boat only when being caught across the lake with 30 MPH plus winds. LOL (Course, high winds and my Bass Boat never got along well together anyway). Oh you can spend over $2000 for a super Yak but it is not necessary. You can get set up pretty good with a Kayak, comfortable seat, paddle, fish finder, and anchor for less than $1000 easy. And you can throw the Yak in the back of a truck or on top of your car and launch just about anywhere. A Kayak may not be for everyone, but there are a lot of to be said for one and is well worth considering. IMHO

I bought a cheap kayak a few years ago for fishing. I believe it was a old town otter sit in kayak. The only gripe I had was I couldn't move my legs once I was in it. I have been wanting to try a sit on top kayak but I have bought one yet. After sitting in the otter for about an hour my but would he numb and my legs would be cramping. I sold the yak and bought a John boat. If I had to choose between the two I would go for the John boat more room for stuff and you can still paddle it if you want.

Everyone proves a good point and the pros and cons of a kayak. But the thing about it is that a I feel that a boat is to high maintance? As for a kayak not so much. So with that said I believe im going to just sell my so call boat and use the money from it towards a kayak. Thanks everyone for the great info and advice this is why I like this here forum.

one man pontoons are more stable and imho are more fun to fish out of because the possibilities are endless not too heavy just a little hard to load up imho one man pontoons are much safer year round because you dont have the same risk of flipping over as well as you can carry more gear in summer time you can put fins on in most 1 man pontoons and use your feet as well as the oars to keep cooled down
as far as kayaks they are great if you can figure out how to maintain your balance while fighting a fish and while trying to fish in wintery conditions a kayak imho is much more dangerous due to water temps and its easier to flip
fish to live and live to fish

I just got a Hobie Mirage Pro Angler for Christmas. I can stand up and throw a 7' cast net in the thing. Very stable.
