I am planning to take my dad to Amistad this spring as a retirement present and neither of us have ever been there. I would appreciate some suggestions on where to stay and where to put in and any other helpfull info you guys may have. Thanks.

We would love for you to stay with us. http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/6910867/1Blackbrush boat ramp is 1 1/2 down the road. If the lake stays up you can put in right behind our facility off Hwy. 454. Tommy's trailers are like being at home and very secure. Rates are $70 per team of 2 people.

+1 on what Donald said. Tommy has very clean trailers and it is as close to being at home as you can get.

Oh ya, if you want to save money cook at the trailer. he has everything to cook with. There are a few places close to eat but if we go out to eat we go to Del Rio. Its not that far and they have a few popular places like Chilis and a wing bar thats pretty good. There is a gas station that has authentic mexican food thats good (One Stop), I think that is the name. They have good mexican breakfast too.

We are staying at Byron Velvick's place. Amistad Lake Resort. Reasonable rates, 24 hour security and very close to Diablo East ramp.

You need to decide whether you want a motel or trailer house type rental. All the of the motels at the lake are about the same and all good places to stay. There are three out by the lake and they are all close to the main ramps.

Last I heard it was slow down there, but then again I felt it was slow all year down there.

I love to fish Amistad...but this past year has taught me to go there from maybe late Feb...when the water warms some...through May. I can't wait to go back but I'm holding off until March. Beginning in March I was launching wherever the leeward launch was the calmest and fishing that area. I caught fish everywhere. It's a great lake for numbers and that's what I like.

I love the hot Summer months; Aug. and Sept. are my best. The deep grass has grown to it's best potential. I enjoy searching for those sweet spots where the big fish are gathered up under the hollows in this deep grass. It is some great fishing when you find them. The rig of choice will be a heavy dropshot or a heavy jig, worked slow along the deepest edge of the grass lines. You will usually find grass in the 20 to 25 ft. depth being the most productive. The big girls will really move into it this year if it gets to 30 ft. deep in the big canyons.

Fished there last April and caught about 125 bass in 3 days, biggest was 8lbs. They were crushing a suspending jerkbait, but it had to be paused or they wouldn't touch it. Also caught a lot on TX rigged senkos, hell we caught some on just about anything we threw but the jerkbaits caught the most. I'll be back there this April as well.

fished there the last three years around this time. Caught some good fish early in the mornings on jerkbaits, around mid morning is when I resort to my favorite Amistad technique and bust a drag C-rigs,football heads, and swimbaits Are my favorite drag baits down there.Usually catch fish anywhere from 10 to 60 feet, the grass is allways a good starting point. Doint be affraid to drag the open water even if the wind is bad. Had one of my best days on that lake last year dragin a swimbait in 3 1/2 foot rollers, you get use to it after awhile. If the wind isnt to bad I allways double back to any place we catch a fish and toss a senko with a 3/16ths weight. Youll be amazed at how much water you can cover doing this. Good luck partner!
