Happy New Year TFF land!!! My wife bought me a new Dual Pro 3 bank 15 amp charger for my boat.My Ranger boat has a built in plug-in for the extension cord to plug in to.I have a couple of questions for the knowledgeable guys/gals out there. The wire that will lead into and provide power to the charger is 18 gauge. Is that heavey enough, or do I need to replace it with a 12 or 14 gauge wire? Second,I bought a 12 guage extension cord to use with it. Is This overkill? Or will a regualr extension cord do? My boat stays in my gararge and the plug is not 6 ft. from my boat. The last thing I want to do is start a fire with too light of a lead wire to the charger. It will be worth the extra bucks for peace of mind. I am thinking of going to Plano Marine here in Longview tommorrow if they are open for advice also. Thanks for you imput in advance. Mark

I have a Dual Pro 3 Bank 15 amp charger in my ranger as well as a Cabelas single bank charger (I have 4 batteries). I have a short 3 foot 3-outlet adapter cord connected to these two chargers on a permanent basis. I connect this adapter cable (with both chargers) to a standard 50' extension cord, and have been charging my boat like this for years with absolutely no problem. There might be some that disagree with this, but it works for me.

I would replace it with 14 ga minimum. Dual Pro recommends that if your extension cord is greater than 30' to use a 12 ga extension cord.

I don't use the smallest 16 guage extension chords but it should not be dangerous. What will happen if you are charging at full output of say 60 amps and 12v that is normally 6 amps at 110v ac. You will probably see a line voltage drop to the charger but most chargers are voltage compensating so it shouldn't be a problem. You might spend a penny or two more charging due to the line losses but I doubt if it would amount to much.
PS 18 guage wire is rated at 16 amps so your Ranger wiring is probably sufficient.

Just a FYI, Dual Pro can be affected by line voltage, That's why they recommend the larger guage on longer runs.
