Hey Guys,
I've been debating a trip to Lake Amistad or Falcon Lake for some time now. I live out in San Diego, CA but I'm in Dallas area often. I was wondering if anyone can weigh in on who would be the best guide choices (results/good people/reliable) for Falcon and/or Amistad.
Also, what's the real safety factor like in Falcon right now. Would the guide have a gun on board as a safety precaution? I think I'd feel a little safer if we were packing some heat vs. a little fishing knife just in case something happened.
And what would be the best airport? Laredo? Lastly, any recommended place to stay or even a guide service that is all inclusive with the guide package and lodging? Thanks for your feedback!

you don't want to carry guns on Mexico side, you might find some human remains like Alton Jones.

Just about any of the full-time guides on Falcon are good.
Behnken, Edwards, Amaya, Combs, Law, Collette, etc
Amistad I would use Hanselman or Dove.

do not carry guns into mexico, folks....
it has been safe on Falcon as of late. I have no qualms about fishing the mexican side. Will you find me there after dark, likely not.
Contact any of the above guides and have at it! They'll take care of everything else.
You can fly into Laredo, it'll take you about an hour to get to Zapata. Some of the guides have hook ups with the local motels, such as Tommy Law. All those guides will put you on fish...

Fished it twice last year with Jim Behnken and then several days after fishing with Jim. Great guide and amazing lake. Never once did I honestly feel one bit threatened. Just keep your eyes peeled and if something doesn't look right head out but never had any issues. If you see the gill netters then everything is cool cause when it was bad for a little while those guys bugged out. As stated do not take a gun in the boat. If you happened to get caught with it in Mexico it wouldn't be good.

Charlie Haralson 956-744-6235 (if available) he lives in Larado and grew up fishing the lake. DO NOT PACK A GUN. Charlie or any other guide won't take you where it isn't safe. We fished a CAST tourney down there in October and were told by the border patrol that there have been no incidents down there for a while. You can call Falcon Lake Tackle and they'll give you any information you need. As far as places to stay, there's a Holiday Inn, Best Western, Sunbridge and others. Most people fly into Larado.

As already said any of the full time guides will put you on fish, now finding one that isnt booked up will be the challenging part. Safety? There are knuckleheads everywhere and Zapata is no different, but here the law enforcement is everywhere and the knuckleheads have a tendency to get caught. Just the other night a guy burnt rubber at the corner where I live and 2 seconds later the cops had em pulled over. Law enforcement is EVERYWHERE. The Amistad Man is the guide I would go with personally if you choose Amistad. Kurt Dove is supposed to be good as well, just dont know him. What time of year are you thinking about?

Why Not, Illegals can carry pistols in USA. IF they get caught they get shipped back to Mexico with no punishment, and only to be back in thier hometown in USA within 10 days. Seen it with my own eyes. Wish Mexico would provide me free transportation back to USA

I highly reccomend Jim Behnken. My Son and I fished 3 days with him in early December and caught a bunch, when most others we talked to did not do well. A great guy and a hoot to fish with. We pent 90% of our time on the Mexican side and never felt nervous. Saw Coast Guard, Border Patrol, Parks and Wildlife as well as Mexican helicopters. What a great lake,
