wolmanized and marine grade or not
the same thing. Marine grade has to
do with the type of glue used the
number of layers thickness of the outer
layer and the amount of voids in the ply
layup. Wolmanized can be most any type
of layup that has been pressure treated with chemicals to retard rot.

For you casting deck it will not
really matter that much and you
can get the wolmanized in thinner
sizes locally. It will be hard for
you to find anything in a Marine
grade in Texas except for Marine Grade
fir 1/2" and 3/4". I've look hard for
some BS1088 and so far have not found
anyone in Texas to get it from, so I'll
be ordering the 15 sheets I'll need of
it out of Florida. And I would not use
poly resins. Nno more than you will need
epoxy will not be that much more and
you'll have a deck that will last
much longer than the original. And
the epoxy will bond much better to
the existing layup than poly.

Take a look here if you would like
to get some good input on boat building
and repair.

And take a look here to see my current
project.

And when you pull that front deck out you
might just be in for a surprise at what
else might not be in to good of shape.

Seriously check out the Iboats link
Good people Good info.

I did a complete new floor in my old '87 startos, completely removed top cap. I used a good AC plywood. After cutting out shape, coat entire pice with fiberglass (top/sides/bottom). This seals the piece completely, never have any rotting problems again. I got my fiberglass from a company in Garland (much cheaper than a marine) they told me do not use Walmanized/ACQ material. And got my carpet at Lowe's.

Good Luck

I would also be very interested in local shops to get fiberglass. Would you mind posting the info? Also, did you use any mat or did you just coat with resin?

Marine grade fir ply is not what to use. Get a Meranti or okuma it is much better than fir and much lighter. Put some 6oz plus glass on it along with a good quality epoxy resin, stay away from the cheap resins that can be found in pep boys etc. If you need more help just email me

I agree but if any can be had in Texas
I have not found it and I've looked hard,
and am quite good at finding things. If
you know where some can be found I'd
appreciate a heads up. I'm fixing
to order 12 sheets out of Florida,
the shipping is the same on one sheet
or 12.

Fort Worth Plywood sells TRUE marine grade wood.

Don't use the green treated wood. The green wood, while treated is actually for termites and insects. There is an OSHA warning sign on the rack of the lumberyard where you buy it from that tells what it is.

Marine grade wood has no knots it in, no air voids, and has a different glue.

Don't use bed liner. Use fiberglass resin and 1.5 ounce chopped mat. The woven material will often spread out, leaving holes between the strands of fiberglass. Chopped mat will give you a better density in coverage.

You can buy the mat and resin at Home Depot or Lowes. Get the bigger sheets of it. You will also need MEKP harner. Rule of thumb is about 4-5% if it is 60-70 degrees outside. You may need to use 5-8% if it is cooler.

Use extra resin than you think you will because the wood will actually absorb a lot of it.

If you can't find Marine Grade, use a good piece of AC fir.

Good luck!

Thanks for all of the info on here. So far I am thinking about using the fiberglass matt and bondo resin from Home Depot (matt only comes in 9 sf packages).

What thickness of ply do you recommend for casting decks. Measuring what is on there I think it is 3/4" put it is hard to tell with the carpet on it. Also, do you use the fiberglass matt on both sides or just the top? And one last question, how do you figure how much resin you will need?
