What is considered high mileage for a diesel truck? What do you consider high mileage on a diesel truck? If you were buying a diesel truck what mileage would you stay away from?
Yes I did admit defeat. Good job back to back champion

I just sold my 02 Dodge with 170k on it and bought an 05 Ford with 180k. The Dodge still ran great, i just needed more room, so I picked up an Excursion. As UsArmy said, miles don't matter as long as it is maintained.
Good luck. Doug

The biggest issue will be maintance history. The second will be the transmission since the life for most transmissions is usually way less than what a diesel engines life span is even with proper maintance.

The work load will reduce the life of anything quicker than miles.

Lots of things go into it. Like said above, maintenance and workload are two big ones.
A guy I work with has an 01 ford with 7.3, it has almost 250K on it and runs and looks like new, but its never even had a trailer hiched to it... at all.
Then you have the old farm truck that only has 130K and is nearing the end of its functional life before rebuild.
Pay alot of attention to the fuel system, it gets expensive fast. Like others have siad the transmition is a big part too and if not taken care of will not last. The other thing to consider is the age of the vehicle. Is it 15 years old with 200K or 2 years old with 200K. I have owned a couple trucks in the 10-20 year old catagory and stuff just plain starts breaking on them, little things that cost more than they are worth to fix, the trucks themselves get loose, and dont seal like they used to. Just things to keep in mind.

My 04 Dodge 2500 4x4 is going to roll 272,000 miles on the way home from work today. Rides a bit rougher due to all of the bushing wear and tear but those will be remidied very soon.
My truck has to last another 100K miles.

I would steer clear of higher mileage diesels that have been modded or chipped, especially a Ford 6.0.

I recently bought a diesel truck (GMC 3500 crew with 8' bed single rear wheel 4x4). I looked at a LOT of trucks from 10 yrs old to 2 yrs old. I liked the 4-5 yr old trucks better for reasons too lengthy to get into but I noticed a drop in price when they were around 100k, 150k and again around 200k miles.
Personally since this was going to be a tow vehicle and not an everyday driver I felt comfortable with shooting for 150 k miles as a purchase point. I didn't want to buy in at 200k because I felt that parts would have to be replaced if the truck had not been maintained really well and the body would have a lot of potential wear if it wasn't a "grocery store" truck.
If you can use a 2 wheel drive the deals are even better. People seem to favor the short bed short wheel base trucks, so if you can use a long wheelbase long bed truck you can deal more on them as well. In the GMC trucks, the 2500 and the 3500 are identical trucks with the exception of an added leaf spring in the suspension that doesnt come into play until loaded up so no difference riding aroud unloaded and the 3500's were less popular than the 2500's so again better bargains to be had.
Just because you can, doesn't mean you should!

My 99 F-350 7.3L went close to 800,000, with a clutch a year. Traded it for a 98 12V Dodge auto. 430,000 and climbing but will need a tranny soon. 1/2 my miles are towing heavy (15K lbs. or more). I think I have had such good luck because of my maintenance program.

I still have my 01 F250 double cab lariat with 7.3. 300k miles. Still a great truck, well maintained with 2 year old tranny.
Just bought new Tundra and I will be putting the F250 up for sale.
