So I'm planning on spending a lot of time targeting alligator gar on the Brazos river around College Station this summer. I know the Brazos is home to a good population of gator gar, I just didn't know how far north their range reached and if I'd have any reasonable chance of success in this section of the river. Was hoping somebody on here could enlighten me.
If I go through with this plan I'll be purchasing a kayak, so I will have some small degree of mobility.

You have all kinds of good gator gar fishing around BCS. When I was in school there in the late 90's we fished Hidalgo Falls (millican falls) all the time. You can click on the link below and get a little history behind the place. Also, might interest you being that you plan on kayaking.
If you can get into Hidalgo just fish down stream of the limestone outcropping there are several "wash" outs in the river. We have caught some monster cats there along with the gator gar. Go to the police pond and stock up on bluegill and fish with cut, live and fresh dead.
The biggest gar I caught was out of the Navasota river off of OSR. Fish was ~ 7.5' long. We fished for cats but caught alot of gator gar.
Hope this helps and enjoy the Brazos!!!

You probably have a good chance of catching alligator gar all the way up to the dam in Waco. But I know from experience that there are some big alligator gar around Hwy21 and further south. Just find some deep pools. If you sit a pool long enough in the summer time you'll see them rolling on the surface. If you don't see any, move to the next pool. I'd try around the mouth of the Little Brazos as well. I always caught a lot of gar there (it's an easy paddle downstream from the Hwy21 bridge).

Thanks for all the responses! Nice to hear that people have had success at this in the past. Now the hard part is just gonna be waiting patiently until things warm up again.
