CB327 - I have a 96 150 EFI Mariner and I had a similar problem with my water pressure. My water pressure wasn't even registering at idle and at wide open was reading about 12psi. I put a new water pump on it and nothing changed.I finally figured out that my water pressure hose from the water pump to the water pressure gauge was stopped up with all kinds of trash. Try disconnecting the hose at the back of your gage and run wide open to see if you have a stream out of the hose. after doing this my water pressure went from 12psi at wide open to about 25psi. Maybe this will help.

I have a 47 year old body and it doesn't seem to pee a stream as strong as it used to. Any suggestions (and please don't suggest what ifishetexas suggested above)

Thanks

i've got a 1985 johnson 150-gt rebuilt back a couple of years ago. this past summer the trouble started. most times it will run just fine to wherever i want to fish, but when i restart and go into gear slow is all she'll do. about the only thing never changed on the moter are the power packs. thanx for any ideas or info.

Capjun, I have a 1987 model 40 hp Johnson. I had to take the power head off and have the shifting rod holders machined because they were broke during an overhaul. I now have the lower unit off because the plate the shifting rod goes through, you know the plate with the o-ring. My problem is I cant get it to shift right, with the lower unit off it shifts fine, when its on the boat I cant get it to adjust, either works in forward and not reverse or works in reverse and wont into forward.

I have a question for you. I got a 78 merc 90hp and there is no throttle in reverse, I have checked the linkage and throttle cables, both appear fine, I have good throttle in forward. The book I have (mercury service manual) don't go into detail about it. What works the throttle when it is in reverse? confused confused

The worst times fishing are still better than the best time thinking about it.

Capjun, I have a 2003 150 yamaha. Should I change the impeller or take it to the dealer. How hard is this model to change? Thanks for any help.

Hey culeoka,
Sounds like the engine may be fouling spark plugs due to too much fuel at low speed. Next time you take it out, and after that first run, try clearing it out by reving the engine in neutral a few times, then attempt to get on plane. What this will do, is burn any excess fuel that might have collected during de-celeration.
I would also check, or have someone check the re-circulation system. This system takes the unburned fuel that collects at the bottom of the engine during low speed operation, and pumps it back into the intake manifold for re-burn. If this system fails,or clogs, then spark plug fouling will occur.
One more thing, If you can remove the spark plugs the next time this happens, and inspect them for excessive fuel, this will help in determining the cause of the problem.
Hope this helps

Hey Wiley199,
This may be a tough one to solve. Make sure the bushings are in place on the shift linkage at the bottom of the powerhead. Any play here needs to be reduced, or removed. I would also check the travel of the linkage. It needs to be the same in both directions. Finally, I would check the control box gears for wear.
If you've had shifting problems before the powerhead rbuild, the sliding clutch dog could be at fault. The lower unit will still shift when removed, because you can move the shift rod further than if it were mounted.
Hope this helps
Capjun

Hey Home_built,
Do you have a seperate warm up lever ? If so, make sure it stays all the way down when accelerating in reverse. You might also take up any slack in the throttle cable. This is done at the motor. With the engine off, and in neutral, look at the throttle arm. It should be against the stop. try to move the throttle arm by hand. If you can, adjust the cable out till it's against the stop.
This may affect the idleing, but you can adjust the throttle stop, and cable adjustments till you get the idle back.
If you get confused, e-mail me, and I'll give you a call, and walk you through it

Hey TZX 190,
I guess it depends on if you have ever changed the water pump on any other outboard. If you have, no problem. If you have not, You might consider taking it in to a shop. Some shops won't let you even see the technician, much less let you talk to them. But I would be happy to show you how to do it. The cost will be the same, but you can learn to do it yourself.
E-mail me if I can help you.
Hope this helps
