didnt they make some with metal drive gears, ?? Don't think so. They're not "plastic or metal". Some type of "composite" stuff. Think tha original ones were a one piece flexable gear that would just "twist" on with one screw to hold it in place. Then came tha two piece...... Merc/Mariner, Identical in tha V6 motors, same part numbers. They even quit paintin' tha powerheads grey in later years....... Mike, If ya haven't noticed, Mercury doesn't use or recomend loctite on tha rod bolts anymore. Don't make it right ta me but they seem ta have their reason..............

If someone wants to remove theirs, Mercury sells a kit for about 6 or 7 bucks. If I remember correctly, you remove the purple and white wire on the drivers side to disconnect the alarm.

How about a Johnson GT150 1986. Does it have that weak system in it? Anybody know? Run or undo the VRO?

how can you tell if a 150 mariner is a 2.0 liter or a 2.5 liter?
COMING SOON! .. THE STICKLE HOOK " the stay level sickle hook". sits level in the water with all knots.! Provides better hook sets and more natural jigging motion. No more adjusting the knot, gluing , or tying loop knots that cause the hook point to tangle in the loop, or worse knick the line.. The jighook that will make all others obsolete !

The only 2.5 150 carb motors are Mag III and XR6. Without any "badges" a serial number is best. If you know what to look for there are a few other ways to tell without pulling a head. Just kinda hard to explain on tha computer.
Pre 2.5's was tha Mag II and XR4, both 2.4 150 carb motors...

what about the late 90s carb engines? I know a guy that went premix on his '99 2.0 litre Mariner 150. He's not really a motor head, but he had heard enough about issues with early mercs that he was convinced it was a "better safe than sorry" thing to do. So was removing the oil injection a waste on this year motor? That would be pretty stupid of mercs to have had the same issue going for what... 15 years!!! without trying to solve the problem.

They have steadily improved tha oil injection on production motors since it came out in '84/'85. Like said they're are several thousand still alive and well. Its just like any other part of a motor. Any part can fail. But it can be done away with and eliminate that part. Just a mater of choice. Bone stock production, well maintained motor, oiler will probably out last most other parts of tha motor....jmo
As for your ?'s in tha other thread. Its a 2.0 piston port motor. Can be "juiced up" very little without some extensive work. But tha gains are not much without spendin' some cash. Better ta make tha most in set-up and such. Just seems better ta save tha money ta buy more horsepower in a different powerhead. There is such a thing as a 200+ hp 2.0 motor but its WAY different than tha production. Its a full blown factory hot rod sold mostly in Europe (F 120's). Some find their way to tha States. Happen ta have one a few years back. Still got a few of tha parts......

Nice to know. Eh, I figured it was worth asking about. I considered it an advantage if a 150 was built to withstand 200 type power... get where I'm going with this? I had no intention of juicing it, but the idea behind it seemed to give me the impression that the engine was built stronger than necessary... Thats all. Thanks!

Tha 2.0 production motor is as "bullet proof" as ANY 2 stroke motor can be.............
