Just out of curiosity ,why do most offshore rig say 24 to 30 feet usually run twin engines vs an inboard diesel

Question: 50 miles out in the Gulf of Mexico in 4 foot seas, you have engine trouble, would a trolling motor be helpful?

Answer: No but a extra motor would be very helpful.

Yep,
Which is why the serious boats have two independent systems for each motor, fuel tanks, electrical, etc, so if something goes awry, it doesn't affect the other.

Also, a single inboard diesel is a booger to steer at slow speeds and tight quarters, like when staying on top of a big fish.....not talking about an I/O but a true inboard, I/O's aren't quite as bad.

Plus, a single diesel won't usually generate the speed desired in a boat that size and the weight distribution is an inhibiting factor.

Believe me I know from experience that extra motor needs to be there.
We were about 9 miles when one motor overheated and sut down, we limped home one the other.
It was a good feeling.
