I have the chance to get a cheap 16ft skeeter bass boat. I'm not worried about it being speedy or anything of the sort, I just want to know if a 35hp motor will be too little for this boat? I realize it will be WAY underpowered, but it's for my dad who has the motor on a piece of junk 15 footer so I'd like to get him something a little better for as cheap as possible. So will this motor get that boat up on plane and work out okay? Please help ASAP because I need to commit to this boat soon.

I dont know if that will be big enough to push a 16 ft fiberglass boat on plane,my 16ft skeeter wrangler had a 115 johnson on it.and it just barely got out of the way.

Most likely it's rated for a 50 HP min, to get it on plane. But just a guess. I have a 1996 Skeeter SS90...16.5 foot I think...and it needs at least a 50 to plane it. I run an old V4 85 Evinrude on it, which will push it to 43 mph with a light load on a good day. ( I have three heavy batteries too.
No way a 35 will push my Skeeter.
But the newer Skeeters are lighter than some of the older ones.
Used boats are cheap. Find him either another engine, or a small aluminum boat for that 35.
Just my 2 cents...

Well it's a steal of a deal at $250 is the thing. The boat comes with a trailer and there are no problems with the boat and even the gelcoat is decent. Eventually we would get another motor but this would just be a little something nice I could do for my father. It's an older 80's something 16 foot skeeter. I know it would be underpowered but I was just praying it would get it on plane. Anyways, I appreciate the help and if anyone else has any input PLEASE LET ME KNOW. Thanks

At $250 take it! I don't think getting on plane is possible but getting on the water certainly is!

I Have a 1992 ss90 16' skeeter. It has a 90 hp on it. The minumum performance range skeeter suggest is a 50 hp. Not sure if a 35 will plane the boat or not. I know mine with jack plate and trimed out it will run 56 mph by gps with light load.

SRjbb99, if you are talking about that brown mid 80's model for sale at craigslist, I used to have a skeeter just like that. I had a 115hp and it would fly, but I am confident you could not get on plane with a 35hp. They are pretty good boats, though. My guess is you would need a 75hp minimum to really make it fishable.

Yeah that's the one I was talking about. I contacted the people the minute(literally) it went on sale, told them I'd be there today to pick it up. We emailed back and forth multiple times, they gave me an address and all, but wouldn't give a phone number. Then they never emailed me back today to confirm I was coming, and then called me with a private number(they blocked the call), and told me someone came and picked it up right about the time I would be there! People like that tick me off! Sorry, I had to vent! They acted like I had it bought and then screwed me.

They raised the price on ya....once they figured out it was maybe worth more. OR...they sold it to a friend. Either way, you got messed over. Wonder why all the secrecy? Didnt want you to come kick their tail?

35 hp sounds a bit small. I had a 16' aluminum BassTracker with a 35 hp Evinrude. That was a light boat, I could easily wheel it around the driveway with one hand. With a fishing buddy and gear, I could top out at 28 mph on Gibbons Creek. Not fast, but fast enough for me and the light boat.
Throw in the weight of a fiberglass boat, and a 35 hp engine would be working pretty hard.
