My 84 200 Mercury was running fine. Recently we was on the lake running about 60 mph and all of the sudden it just quit. It started right back up but when you give it throttle in gear it dies. It will rev up when not in gear , but it takes it a while to get the rpm's up. Any ideas?

Wonder if you possibly spun your prop hub? Might need to get it rehubbed. Will it go into gear and just not go anywhere or does it just die when put in gear?

This could be from a lot of different things from fuel delivery, or lack of, to ignition system failure to major motor problem. Get it to a tech and let them look it over. If in the meantime you take it to the lake and run and have someone squeeze the primer bulb. If this resolves your problem then you know it is fuel related.

BP Sounds like you have a stator going if it died like you turned the key off it is the stator because the stator is what generates the voltage to run the ignition system OPTI

How do you test the stator opti?

BP You need a DVA meter to check the voltage output of the stator need to take it to a Merc dealer or there is a another way, you say it only will run up to 1500 to 2000 rpm's run it up and start with a set of insulated pliers and pull a plug wire off one at a time.You will probably find that you have have weak or no fire on one whole side and if that is the case it is the high side charging coil in the stator for those particular cylinders. If you weren't so far away I'd fix it Hope this helps OPTI

Opti, you hit the nail on the head. All cylinders on one side was dead. Will order a new stator tommorow. Thanks for all your help Opti.

A person suggested lake park marine to me when I had a similar problem, I t took the boat there on Wednesday of last week and it was ready friday. I had a high-speed stator issue but, also had my carp re-build and fuel pump replace cause the boat had been sitting for nearly a year. I pick-up the baot today, so far I have been very impressed with the folks out there!

It is recommended to change the ignition box`s when you change the stator. If it is the stator you will see your tach quit working. Each ignition box fires a bank of cylinders. Sounds to me like you lost a ignition box.

If one side of the high side of stator goes out you will lose one side of fire just like if the switch box was bad OPTI

opti i have similar problem ildles up somewhat ok put in gear dies runs really rough. in gear one time' took off and everything went dead nothing worked for 2 or 3 minutes
