it seems like such a waste to throw out bait but i recall hearing that one cannot use whole trout for bait. how about their heads?

Only if you have lots of extra cash. No part of a game fish can be used for bait. Sad but true story: A Texas fisherman really wanted to catch the record striped bass. He did, but then TPWD gutted the fish and found a trout inside. They arrested the guy, threw out the record and took away his fishing privileges.

That's true you can't use any part of a game fish for bait dead or alive. I remember when a fisherman got caught using a live rainbow trout for bait, and I believe it was behind the dam at Texoma.

It was Possum Kingdom tailrace. A very famous case.

use the heads for fertilizer or give back to the environment by feeding them to turtles. It's the circle of life.

This is one issue TPWD needs a little thumping on -- it borders on STUPIDITY -

What do Biologists think of this regulation? It is a Fish eat Fish world - if I am a piscivorous fish and you as a smaller fish will fit in my mouth GUESS WHAT? You are dinner - a few states recognize this fact - our neighbor state just a little North allows you to fish with ANY fish as long as it was part of your legal creel and caught with legal methods - you can use largemouth, crappie, trout, or any parts or pieces of fish whole or not - recognizing the FACT that in nature its part of the natural cycle --

Texas needs to rethink this position

Can't say that I agree entirely with this, but I do agree that it should be legal to use parts of the fish carcasses once you've cleaned the fish.

In Alaska, fishermen may use the heads & carcass bits of salmon as bait for halibut, crabs etc. No reason why we shouldn't do the same here - waste not, want not.

So its ok to use bluegill and brim for catfish but not the heads of trout? Thats gay. I know there was a story back alongggggg time ago about a guy who wanted to catch this huge catfish at lake o pines and he wanted to use bullhead to catch the cats. Well the tpwd said NO so he did it anyway and got into trouble.

But also here is a stupid question/scenario as well. Well back about 6 years ago i was fishing fork and caught a small crappie and while reeling it in had a bass grab the crappie and it broke my line and he/she swam off with the crappie. Now what if the tpwd pulled up and i was taking the bass off the crappie? Im glad i only had 4lb test and it snapped the line.

I think common sense would prevail here. If you caught the crappie on light line with a small jig odds are you were fishing for crappie to begin wil

Close to the real story, but he was caught using trout. Very common for the stripers behind the damn at PK to be full of trout.

I am sorry if I did not get the story just right. I was working from memory, which is not nearly as good as it once was.

Bulkhead is legal to use as bait, as it is not a game fish...

Must be a different story. The one RedRanger and I were discussing was definitely at PK. Trout are not currently stocked in the Texoma tailrace.

Those URL's are a broken link.
