I am new to the boating game and have a question. I have a 1998 189 Blue Wave with a 115 Johnson. No trolling motor. Depth finder, GPS, radio (not marine), and would like to add a marine C.B. I bought the boat used and it only had one battery, it was not a marine deep cycle. I am going to buy a new battery and was wondering if I should buy a deep cycle or a regular battery.

You would want to stay with a cranking battery. The only time you want a deep cycle battery is for trolling motors. Your electronics can run off the main starting battery with no problem.

The biggest thing is to get the biggest battery you have room for.

I have a multi functional deep cycle/cranking battery made by Stowaway sold at Academy and have had pretty good luck with them. I had one go bad and they never asked any questions and took it back and gave me a new one.

Good luck.

Need clarification:

I run a 35 Johnson, use a ff, and a 40 lb thrust trolling motor

Do I need a seperate battery for the Troller?

the battery I use now is a cranking

Everything wired into this one batt.

Hooker,

A lot of marine batteries now are actually classified as Deep Cycle/Cranking. There are two issues with using just one battery. The first is obvious, you don't want to run down your cranking battery with your trolling motor. Second is that if you are using a sonar unit, then you are introducing noise (interference) to it when your TM is running. My recommendation is to run seperate batteries. If space is your limiting factor, then bet the biggest battery you can fit in the space allowed. And I hope you can rope start your motor in a pinch.

Good Luck!

I would definitely suggest running the trolling motor off of a separate battery. Otherwise you will run one battery down and then be pull starting like TXChamp said. If you have 2 batteries you can always use the trolling battery to jump the cranking battery if needed too. Or if you run the trolling battery down you can still start the big motor.

Still get the biggest 2 batteries you have room for.

Good luck.
