I drove out to prospect El Jardin Park for wade fishing the flats. There was a sign "Beware of Alligator." Anyone know anything about this. I want to wade there Saturday morning. How is the fishing?

Just curious with all the great fishing spots in the Galveston Bay area you would even consider wading where there is a sign warning about gators.
I may be a dumb ole hick from Pasadena, but if I see a warning sign about gators, I stay away. I just think there is a good reason they put that sign there.
I'm always catch and release, except for cut bait.

I talked to a couple of guys who fish that spot today. They said there was a report of an alligator about two years ago, but they left the sign up. The report is that is a great fishing spot.

I lived in Central Florida for quite a while, and wade fished for bass in the heart of some of the heavy gator inhabitated lakes in that area.
There are a few things you don't do, let em know you are scared, wade when visibility is low, like dawn, dusk, night, etc. Know when breeding season is and stay away from the eggs, and little ones, momma is pretty protective. Gators are not interested in you unless you are a threat or smell like food, and will usually leave you alone, unless you startle them they usually hiss or threaten you before attacking, if they see you are backing off slowly, they let you go.
The dangerous gator is one who has been fed by humans, then they associate human smell to food, and they become agressive towards you.
I would worry more about cotton mouths, or American crocadiles because they both are very territorial, and much more agressive than an ol gator.

That alligator was found dead on the beach this summer. I avoided the marshy areas of El jardin for the longest time because of the wildlife(gators/snakes). When they used to have the pier I would catch some big ol fish off the end. The water there is real shallow for a good bit out then drops to over 6ft. Be careful, ship wake is common out there.
Back 10 years ago I would ride my bike down there about every day and catch fish. Hadn't fished there since Ike took down the pier. Let me know if you want some company. Just not on the weekends, that place is a madhouse

Oh and don't get on land on the right side past the beach. That lady will call police every time. Had many experiences with her "this is MY water" stance.
