I have an 1995 88 hp Evinrude....

I had to replace the ignition switch and the fuel line from bulb to motor.....

Sat. it ran for 10 min. (more smoke than usual)and never would fire afterwards.

We changed the plugs, (We thought we might have fouled them)....

Cranks fine, battery checked out

Could be flooding the engine??, smell gas....

Any ideas??

Spark check: one at a time, remove a spark plug, reconnect it to the lead, hold it against the engine block while someone engages the starter. Look for a sharp blue spark. To avoid electroshock therapy, use an insulated spark plug boot tool or ask your mother-in-law to do it.

If you get spark, check for fuel by spraying premixed fuel into the carb throats while cranking the engine. If it starts momentarily or tries to start, troubleshoot your fuel delivery system.

If you get no spark, take the ignition switch out of the circuit by unplugging the big red wiring harness plug, and crank the engine by jumping the solenoid, while checking for spark on one cylinder. Best to do this with all the plugs disconnected - if it starts you won't have any way to shut it off except unplug the fuel line and run it dry or else flooding it out by manually activating the primer. Use jumper wires to ground the spark plug leads to the engine block to avoid blowing a powerpack.

If you get spark with the harness disconnected, it's probably in your keyswitch. The switch shuts off the motor by connecting the two "M" terminals (black/yellow kill wire to ground) when key is turned to off.
