force was chrysler then they were bought out by quicksilver (mercury) I believe. I have an older 70hp actually a chrysler and I like it. I havent dealt with getting any parts yet, but am about to start looking for a distributer and a rotor myself. Heard nothing negative about them. ------------------ TEXAS HOOVES AND HORNS

I have a 97 90hp on my boat, this will be my 4th year with it...I have not had any problems with mine(KNOCK VERY HARD ON WOOD),,,all the force is , is a Merc motor but some parts are differnt..you should not have a prob. buying parts, Merc bought them out a few years back...My motor says Force made by Merc on the side of it...I have been told that if you take the same year model that the Merc motor has a little more power. ....the only bad thing about mine is IT DOES NOT LIKE COLD WEATHER...but it has to be about 28 degrees and still dark, but once the sun hits it or I run it a little it pures like a kitten...when I first start it when it is that cold it just dies easy when I am inching up to the boat ramp...but I am not a motor expert so that is just my 2 cents worth... ------------------

I HAD A 4O FORCE ON A PONTOON 1994 MODEL KEPT HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE LOWER UNIT IT WOULD WEAR THE EDGES OFF THE SHUTTLE GEAR IN FORWARD AND MAKE A NASTY GEAR STIPPING SOUND. REPLACED GEARS TWICE IN THREE YEARS AT ABOUT $400 A POP. DONT OWN THE BOAT OR MOTOR ANY MORE. WOULDNT BUY ANOTHER FORCE THOUGH.

I purchased a new boat/motor in 1994 with a 90 Force. It has never given me any problems. I do all of the maintenance on it my self so I know what has been done to it. I took it to the lake last week after it had been sitting parked for about 7 months. It fired up on the first crank and never died. Note I always put fuel and carberator stabalizer in the motor if I know it is going to be sitting for a long time. The only thing I have had to replace was the water pump after 6 1/2 years and I did not have any trouble finding parts.

I too was skeptical about buying a boat with a Force engine. My Nitro has a 1997 - 120hp. Once I figured out the starting combination LOL, it has been a great motor. No problems at all. Sat for 3 months Nov,Dec, and Jan started right up in 27* weather. paul

I just purchased a boat with a 120 Force. I don't believe it is the best motor in the world (it's carburated), but it isn't bad.
I found it to be very, loud at WOT. So this weekend while messing with fuel line (the little screw on the inside of the cowling is missing) I noticed that the top of the cowling was missing the foam rubber. I don't know what this stuff is, but it looks like something you could pick up at either a hardware store or walmart for a quarter. It turns out that I had to order it from Travis boating centers (Mercury informed me that was the Mercury representative in the area). It was $18.00 dollars...I maybe stupid, but at least I'm..
Well. I was later told that you have to watch that rubber, because that may be part of the problem that the Force engines had...not that it is loud, but that foam starts to fall apart (if you run your hand over it and it flakes off it is time to replace) it could get sucked into the carbs (the top carb) causing it to clog. I was told that you will not notice it at first, because it is only 1 of the carbs, but you will not be getting the correct oil/gas mixture in there and end up scorching/scratching that cylinder.
Now all I need to do is figure out what type of glue is needed to put that foam rubber back on top of the cowling. At first I thought about using expanding foam, but I was told it will not hold up to the heat inside that cowling, and it would break apart.
