I have a 1986 v200 Mercury Black Max w/ the dual float center bowl carbs. I was curious if you could tell me the recommended Jet sizes for the carbs. The numbers are as follows:
top stamped: WH31-1 (2315)
middle stamped: WH31-2 (2385) not sure why(#'s)
bottom stamped: WH31-3 (2315) are stamped?
The S.N. for the motor is 0A913375.
The Clymer manual only goes to WH29. The reason for asking is I am currently having the motor re-built and the carbs being too lean was one of the reasons of the failure. After inspection of the carbs I found 2 idle jets 2 different sizes in 1 carb. 2 high speed jets 2 different sizes in 1 other carb, and the float levels all wrong (1/4" off) in all carbs.
Thanks for any replies.

Hey Mark-O,
WH31 is the model number, or style of carb,( there are about 8 different type carb's on Mercury V6 engines). The -1, -2,-3, indicates 1 = top location,2 = middle, and3 = bottom location.
The different jet sizes in each carb is very critical ! If the jets are installed in the wrong location, the motor will burn up in a hurry.
You have to, wet set, the float level. 6 floats, 6 levels.
Be careful when building these carb's, cause it would be a shame to burn up a fresh rebuild.
E-mail me for my phone number, and I'll get you the right jet size, and locations.

hey Texasframer,
Sorry to hear about your engine. E-mail me for my phone number because I do have a complete used Mercruiser engine that came out of a Tri-Sonic. The boat was junk, but I removed the engine and outdrive. Hopefully they are about the same.

'89 yamaha 40 HP and the tilt&trim will work when the motor is in neutral or not running but will not lift the motor if running down the lake under power, but it will lower it. It will work with the throttle in any position, when the motor is not running. The fluid level is good.

Capjun, I have a 2003 Mercury 2 cycle outboard 5 hp that will start when choked, shove in the choke and runs for 5 or 6 seconds...then dies like it is out of gas. Carb is cleaned and like new, all jets open, all gaskets new, etc. New fuel mix, gas gets pumped to the bowl in a couple of pulls...when I take out the drain screw, gas runs out. I can keep it running by "playing" with the choke, pulling it out and shoving it in. It responds to the throttle after I choke gas and push the throttle in...for 5 or 6 seconds and then dies like it just ran out of gas. From what I was told by the previous owner, this motor was only used 3 times in the last year. I cant get in contact with him as he has moved, so I cant get any more info about the motor, etc. Any idea about what causes this problem? Thanks, Chuck confused confused confused

Hey Chuckwagon,
If playing with the choke keeps the motor running, the motor is not getting fuel when the choke is off. I know you said that the carb has been cleaned, but it's still cloged somewhere.
I serviced a 4 hp suzuki about 7 yrs ago, and cleaned the carb, but it would run. My service manager told me to clean it again. I cleaned it a total of 6 times, then he told me to order a new carburetor. The snaller the engine, the smaller the metering tubes, orafices, and so on.
Hope this helps
Capjun

Capjun, I will clean it again. I can take it off and put it on blindfolded now. When it starts with choking, it smokes trememdously, is that any indication of anything? Thanks, Chuck smile smile :p smile :p

Hydralic cylinder O-ring worn out. Take the cylinder off and take to a hydralic shop and let them repair it. TBill

capn, I have a 98 115 evinrude that dies idleing. It idles around 800-1000 rpm for a short time but it will pop like a misfire and die. If I bump up the engine to 1100 it runs fine all the way through to wot. I changed the plugs but it didn't help, btw the old plugs looked good. It is oil injected. Any help would be preciated.

I have a chrysler 15hp and I seem to like to drive in shallow water too much not on purpose just lack of experiance and no depth finder. Anyway I think I finally broke something due to this. I think the prop has become seperated from the rubber thing that is on the drive shaft. I don't really know what to call all of the parts but if I turn the prop it just spins on top of the rubber thing. It is like I have worn one or the other out. How would I order some new parts and how do I replace those parts? Thank you for being so helpful.

Dear Capjun,
I have a question about a 1978 Mercury 1500.
I pump the bulb and I have good idle and can take off good out of the hole then it phdddddddddddddd's out and dies. I pump the bulb again and same thing. I replaced the line and the bulb. I started at the tank (BUILT IN) and am routing from there to the carbs. My next thing to replace is the fuel pump. Should I?
Anything you can think of to help me out on this would be greatly appreciated. wink
