How much should it cost to replace a water pump impeller on a 2 stroke-90hp Johnson?

It is very cheap if you do it yourself. The parts will cost you less than $30 if I remember right (for a Merc 150). Put the throttle control in neutral, drop the lower unit (CAREFULLY). Remove the impeller and replace it with the new one. The trickiest part is getting the lower unit back into the motor correctly... With two guys, its much easier. Go talk to a mechanic and get the schematics for your make and model. You'll be surprised how easy it is. To pay to have it done, labor rates are $+/-70 per hour plus parts. I'm guessing at LEAST an hour or two. Bottom line: If I and my non-fishing father in law can do it on a 150 Merc, you can too!

It is pretty simple if you got any mech. skills at all. Just be sure to note the way impeller fins are turned. Put a little grease on them when going back. After the 1st one they are easy.

Most shops get 60-70.00 labor + parts. The shift lever bolt on some omc motors can be a pain. Have seen several mess-ups from owners trying to save $60.00. Take it to someone, that knows wat they are doing. If you pull lower unit off in neutral makes it hard to get in to crankshaft splines when reinstalling. Also needs to be in gear to rotate impeller into pump housing. Take care with shift shaft. Make shure it is ingaged correctly before bolting all the way up ( Mercs ). Do not rotate shift rod on omc`s. Will not shift right. Good Luck

Gary, where did you get yours done for that price? Last fall I paid $185. I guess that's what I get for letting the dealer do it.

As a marine tech, the flat rate manual calls for 1 1/2 hrs. labor, at $70.00 per hr. The impeller,(sierra part # 18-3059), costs 31.90, last time I checked. Also, be careful, You MUST first disconnect the shift shaft. Good luck, If you need more info, Please e-mail me, I'll be happy to walk you through it, and if you still can't get it, I may start taking in some side work.
