Went last Fri....skunked, went this past Monday......skunked, went today.....you guessed it. Each time 6-8am to 3-5pm had a different spot either on the point or near it by the reeds, 2 med spinning set-ups, 2 med/hvy spinning set-ups, all carolina or texas rigged. Tried frozen shad, frozen shrimp, cured chicken liver, regular chicken liver, shad gizzards, Lewis King, Big Marvs, Secret 7, Danny Kings, Yeh Monn-shad-liver-crafish flavors and not a damn bite, fed the babies i'm sure of it since no bait would be left when reeled in. I walk in as far as I can and cast with 3oz weight then set rod in holder sit pop a beer. Is it just the time of the year or am I doing it all wrong? Use to work great 2 years ago before all my gear got stolen and had not fished till this past friday after getting bit by the bug again. Any advice from anyone fishing Braunig or Cali is appreciated. Not gonna give up heading back Friday evening.

texas and carolina rigged for using catfish bait? That may be your problem right there.

Braunig is not easy lake to fish but like someone mentioned here get a cast net for yourself and catch some fresh shad . Been to Braunig few times for banking we did good for the hours we spent out there .
Find some live shads/perch cut them and use them . This time of year you might need to look on deeper areas you won't get them in shallow waters.

I don't fish Braunig. But heard the shad are usually pretty easy to catch around the boat ramps on both lakes (calaveras too). We didn't catch any shad on my last trip to Cali. I was wondering what's up with the shad? Are they deep during the cold?
I bank-fished Cali on Veterans day. 11/11/11. 7am to noon. Morning Temp was 35 degrees and warmed to around 70. We couldn't catch shad that day. So instead, we caught talapia and used them as cut bait. We didn't get any bites with talapia.
It just so happened, I brought some big marv's that day. I finally tried some around 10am and "bam" got a hit within 5 minutes. We caught a dozen channels 2-3lbs after that. all on Big Marv's.
Just curious about the shad on both lakes. thank goodness for Big Marv's.
Shut up and fish!

Shad, this time of year, especially right after a cold front, even a small drop in temperature, the shad will run deeper. Sometimes you may be able to catch up all laid up in the moss, next to the 2nd boat ramp in Calaveras, really shallow but messy. throw your net in there, expect lots of junk but you may end up with some shad. I have never used the punch bait stuff, How does that do??

went back today from 7am-1pm caught 4 reds all went back 16-19" on shrimp and 12 12-18" blues on Yeh Monn shad and liver flavors. Frozen shad fed the baby bluegill and cured chicken liver didn't get touched. Punch and dip bated dissolved into the lake with no bites. Gonna head out and try and find more Yeh Monn, seems to always sell out at everr Academy or BPS here in SA.

Reviving this old thread in hopes of finding some sweet spots on Braunig lake. I tried my luck out today from 11-2 and didn't get a bite. It wasn't really packed, but there were plenty of fisherman out there today. I was using live shad caught earlier with my cast net. Any pointer would be Appreciated.
