I have the opportunity to get back home on a business trip this week (originally from Houston, now living in Cincinnati, OH) and have about 7 hours free to get on a bit of water with the fly rod. Any suggestions for locations within an hour or hour and a half of Austin that are fly fishing friendly? Any of the state parks worth hitting? Recommendations on what fly selection to bring with me?
Thanks for your help! Darin

Guadalupe below Austin for trout is about 1 hour from downtown Austin. 4wt or 5wt rod. Waders. Pt, worms, HEN, zebra midge. Click here to see some places to access the river. It is all fee access to get on the river, but once you are in the river you are on public land.

Thanks Castell for the locations and tips on the what to toss.
Anyplace to fish from bank? As packing the waders and boots means checked baggage. Is bass season over? Any place to gun for a few smallies or largemouths? What about decent size panfish?
Thanks for all y'alls help. D

Check with Action Angler in New Braunfels. He's on the river and might rent you some waders.

Right under 35 N of San Marcos the Blanco River widens, pools up, and has good bank access. Pull in and give it an hour +. You'll be glad you did, and can check a great little river off your Texas list.
Unless you are wearing a grass skirt and sleeping in a ditch and eating only road kill, you too are part of 'the problem'.

Agree with Just Fish on getting with Chris at Action on wader rentals. $20 for the day.
For bass or sunnies, you might get with one of the kayak rental places on Town Lake (Lady Bird Lake) about getting a kayak rental and fish along the area around Red Bud Isle. You could also get with the folks at Cook's Canoe on the Colorado about doing a canoe or kayak rental & float from Little Webberville Park to Big Webberville. We have had some cold weather recently so fishing for bass will be a little slow compared to the fall months but if you have a string of days that are warmer the bass fishing should be decent.

Where do you fish in Cincinnati? I'm from there and could give you a few spots to try for hybrids during the run in spring and fall. The spots are actually good all around fishing spots with good largemouth, smallmouth, hybrid stripers, carp, buffalo, and channel cats. What area are you living in there? I travel back a bit and tend to bring a rod with me, so maybe on one of the trips I'd meet up with you to show you some good spots.
