I go through the saltwater fishing section and I see alot of high visibility fishing line. So my question is does the line color matter like it does in freshwater? The reason why I ask is because a friend of mine gave me a bulk spoool of Berkley Big Game high vis green 15 # and I was wondering if it mattered or not. Thanks!

It depends.. I would say that it's a little less important with an occasional caveat. Upper coast with dingy water probably doesn't matter... upper coast clear water in the winter and lower coast clear water fishing for big trout shallow I wouldn't use it.. you can however use a 5 or 6 foot leader of clear flouro carbon about 20# on the end of it and you'll be fine. I use a flouro leader on braid which is a similar situation your in. join it with a blood knot or crazy alberto (albright with a twist).

Big game is good line, no sense throwing out the spool just cause it has a little color.

Yes it matters if you are around Spanish Macks, they will bite off lines they can see --

Sure it can matter in super clear water. If I am using topwater or spinnerbaits that move right along I do not much care. But when fishing plastics in clear water I prefer clear, and like TroutSupport says, just use a flouro leader. My .02 worth.

Good Luck and Tight Lines.

Seeing all the opinions on TFF, Im starting to think line visibility is becoming a CONFIDENCE thing.

Ive had some of the best days using 50 lb braid in clear water. The same goes for flouro.

However, for sure you should use a strong leader when going saltwater and check it each time you hook a fish. Specks and Smacks (and of course sharks) can nick it good, causing break-off on your next hookset.

I am fishing in salt and fresh water with braid+fluorocarbon leader all the time.

One day i was fishing on the bank at TRINITY RIVER ,drop shot, with 19'6"=6m.telescopic rod, using FIRELINE SMOKE 4LB +10lb.fluorocarbon leader. The water was very dirty with all 12 gate of Livingson Dam open.
I was catching many white bass, but i lose the rig when i have hanging up in someting under water.
Because the water was very dirty i have making another rig using Stren original 10 lb.,to save some fluorocarbon line. But the fish don't bite , so i was mnaking again the rig using SEAGUAR CARBON PRO 10LB.fluorocarbon and the bites start again.

Start with that day i never fish with leader mono normal ,just using mono fluorocarbon leader,i don't care if the water is clear or dirty(fresh or salt water).

Ok, here's the opposite, last week fishing back lakes, water is crystal clear... I'm tied direct to 1/8 oz oldham jig head w/20 lb power pro. Guest has all of his flourocarbon leader, no tricks, just drifting the flats, same plastic.

I catch four of the six reds, and 14 of the 20 trout. Once again, it really doesn't matter if you want to fool with all that stuff and you really believe it makes a difference, get all over it.

I tie direct to 20# Power Pro, haven't been outfished by anyone using mono or fluorocarbon leaders. IMO, if you have the right bait with the right presentation it doesn't matter much what kind or what color your line is. Friday after Thansgiving fishing in Clear Lake, water is pretty clear, me: 2 reds on glow flapping Devils, 2 trout on topwaters, my buddy with braid & fluorocarbon leader: 3 trout on topwaters, other friend with mono, 2 trout on top waters.

Yes, it does matter. Whenever I see one of those guys wearing sweatpants and dress shoes with his surf rod and lime green line, he never catches anything and I know I am in the wrong spot. Fish cannot be caught on lime green line.

I don't fish saltwater weekly (or even monthly) but have fished the salt off and on for over 35 yrs. If I use braid, I prefer a fluoro leader, especially if the water is fairly clear. But, I have used 12#-15# mono for years and always seem to catch just as many fish as anyone else around me. Normally clear or green Berkley Big Game. I have also used plenty of the clear and pink colored Ande line with good success, normally in 20#-25# test for longer rods. I believe confidence is the biggest key plus fishing where the fish are, lol..

I think it depends on what you are fishing for. We use 400lb mono leaders for sharks and reds with no problems. We use steel leaders for kings but I'm told cobia are line shy....

It's pretty thick but you don't have to mess with steel leaders that way and it's abrasion resistant enough to pull in a shark.
