I'm thinking Santa needs to bring me one. Does anybody have experience with this rod, and how do you like it? Thanks

The Mini Mag is a two handed broadsword among rapiers. It isn't delicate, but then it isn't meant to be. I've got the bigger and smaller version and have thoroughly enjoyed both.

I did a little digging and came up with the thread about getting mine a couple of years back. You might find some useful information in there. Pay particular attention to george1's comments. He did a lot of the prototype testing for that rod and is a wealth of knowledge on all things fly flinging.

Good luck!

If I could only own one fly rod, it would be a TFO 8-10 MiniMag - as much as I love the Axiom and BVK fly rods.

'Ya wanna know why?
I call it my anytime - anywhere for anything fly rod a utility rod and I use that term complimentary. First of all, it's virtually unbreakable, having an "S" glass butt section, transitioning into a hybrid S glass/carbon fiber mid section into a carbon fiber tip section.

Tremendous lifting power and a great load and shoot rod designed for short casts but capable of sweet 70 footers.

I had the privilege of field testing the MiniMags with great results.

Thanks for the input guys. I think the broadswoard approach will fit in just fine with my casting style. Thanks for providing the links for more info. Here comes Santa Claus.

YES SIR! I have the 6-8 Mini Mag and love love love it! I matched mine with the Sage Bass Series 290 grain fly line and it is amazing. With the backbone of the rod and the brute force of the line, I can rocket big bass flies 50+ feet with just one back cast.

I have broken two within a month. It's a cool rod butt the brake-age concerns me some.

One on the Jetties of Port A, and one setting the hook on a fish on the Colorado River. Both broke in the exact same spot on the rod.

Which section - butt, mid or tip?
I can understand an accident on the Port A.Jetties but setting the hook?
Never broke one even tho I tried on a 15 lb grass carp that took me into the backing.

That's distressing, Derick.

Do you have pictures? Have you called the folks at TFO? I'd think they'd want to know if they have an issue that might have roots in their manufacturing process so that they can address it.

Both rods broke right below the first furrel.(sp?)TFO replaced the first one for me. I have ye to send he new one back, just been super busy in life the last couple months. George the one on a fish could have been a large drum or something of the sort because it was hooked from the bottom of a brush pile, and I was moving downstream and had a least 60' of line out at the time. I am guessing the current of the river and the angle of the line had something to do with it. I am in Coppell right now,but I doubt I will be able to make it over to TFO today, and the broken rod is in Austin anyway.

Thanks for the report Derik - I'm with TXRR - call Brandon at TFO or one of their guys and report the problem.
The MiniMag is a scaled down Baby Bluewater which is designed for saltwater heavy lifting and shouldn't break, especially at or near ferrule as you described.
