I have an almost new 04 Jeep cherokee I bought it last year I have a little over 38000 miles on it, I know it sounds alot but I did alot of traveling last year.

anyway My keyless entry remote isnt working right, ( i just changed the batteries and it didnt help)

I can arm and unlock the doors while inside the vehicle with no problem. but if I STEP outside the car it will not work. Now I can go to the passanger side of the car while outside and hold it agaist the car and it will unlock the doors and relock them. but if I go anywhere else around the car it will not do anything.
I took it to the dealer and they want 80.00 just to tell me what is wrong with it.
So I didnt know if maybe someone on here is a wizard when it comes to keyless entry and could maybe tell me what the heck is wrong with this. or if you think its the reciever or the transmitter. being it works inside the car with no problems I am wondering if its the reciever. and where it is located.?

any help would be appreciated.

thanks
Robert

Maybe the replacement batteries were old too. I had that happen with my garage door opener. Started out working a block away, then I had to stick my arm out the window while in the driveway. Changed batteries, same thing. 3 months later, changed batteries again, now the GDO works from a block away.

I would have to agree with sasquatch. Look at it like this...why can't cast more than 10 yards??? Oh, I don't have a full spool of line on my reel. Same thing as the battery.

If all else fails take a volt meter into the store so you can check the battery before you buy it, go back to the store you bought it and ask for another one.

When in doubt SET THE HOOK!

Wal mart sells the batteries for $3.99.
Go to the watch counter.

Hey guys I went and purchased two more batteries last night and it still is not doing anything,
I have called everyone I can think of trying to figure out if maybe the remote has somehow gotten de-programmed but then I would think it would not work at all.

My other thought on this is that maybe the reciever antenna is broken or has come loose?
but I have taken everything on the car looking for it and can not figure out where it might be..

The remote does work on the passanger side but only if I hold it agaist the car.
and nothing on the driver side.
Thanks for your suggestions and any help is appreciated as always.

Robert

When someone told me this, I thought for sure he was joking. Try it anyway... while holding the remote vertical, aim at the bottom of your chin then press the button. I flipped when it worked. It may work for you too.

simple way to test your key fob is to find a telephone in your house that has a cord from the base to the headpiece and point and press the buttons on the keyfob to the base of the cord between the headpiece and the base and listen for a clicking type noise, if you hear this noise then your reciever is working. give it a try and let me know

Robert,

If you are sure the problem isn't with your remote's batteries, try another remote, program the Cherokee to accept that one, and see if you have any better luck. I'm sure the dealer will help you with that one without charging you.

If things are no better with the second remote, then you have a reception/interference problem with the Jeeps internal antenna. Have you added any RF equipment to your car (satellite radio, GPS, etc.) that could interfere? If not, you've got to hunt down the remote entry antenna and check the connection and integrity of the antenna. If that's ok, you may be able to boost its reception by extending and/or repositioning it.

If all the above does not work, it could be the control unit itself. And as an aside, the chin-trick does work, but will probably drive you mad after a while... wink Good luck.

i checked the telephone thing and I didnt get it to click or anything, I am 100% sure its not the batteries as I bought a thirs pair just to be safe.

I have added any new things to the car. I have looked and looked for the reciever anttena and can not find it. so if someone has a hint as to where it might be please let me know.

I am on my way to check out the different link you guys sent to me.
