Four of us went on our first hunt in Kansas with an outfitter out of Dighton KS. Man, all I can say is what a rush. They had two Brittanys and two German Shorthaired that worked with us. It was as much a thrill watching good dogs work as it was shooting pheasant. We had three guided hunts and one on our own without dogs. We manage 75 birds. Dogs on point. It was amazing to watch them work and honor each other. Happy Hunters at the end of the hunt. Trip is the puppy in training. We got to be with him on his first hunt. This was his second hunt and he actually caught and made his first retrieve on one of the birds I shot. Fortunately the bigger dogs had gone to retrieve my buddy's bird on the other side. After that it was game on for Trip. We got about an hour to go out on Sunday without any dogs. We jumped three and got all three. This is Gunter "The Old Man". He took my seat when I got up. He was bushed after a long day of hunting. He is 11. That was his only day to hunt.

Thanks guys. This is on a Preserve. They do an extensive stocking program in the Early Spring. Then hope Mother Nature takes its course. We paid just a little more than what we do in the Panhandle with a Rotary hunt and motel. Plus a bigger limit was available more than normal. They have a season until March. Very good people with a place to stay included. Breakfast and Lunch provided for a two days on a Two Day hunt. Home cooked meal and hospitality second to none. If anyone is interested I can get the information to you on the contacts. They have a lot of dates already booked. It took us about 9 hours driving to get there. About 1.5 hours longer than the Panhandle.

I am from Kansas and I just got back from the hunt. I haven't missed and opening weekend for 20 years. This year was pretty good, but last year was better. We go all the way up to the NW part of the state where some friends of ours live. We shot 19 birds between 3 of us in a day and a half.
The SW part of the state got hammered with drought and I have heard it's been tough. If you go this year, go north of 1-70 and wait for a good snow. That's the best time.

The great think about Kansas is that they have a ton of walk in hunting land. So if you go after opening weekend you can hunt in almost every county in the state for free.
My suggestion: Go to Norton, KS and stay there and hunt all the way to the Colorado line just hunting walk in. Like I said, it's free.

We talked to several guys that had been as for as South Dakota and the bird population is down this year bad from the drought. I have been on canned hunts before and this one didn't seem to have that type of feel. It was more normal. We walked the area without dogs and didn't do as well. With the dogs it made all the difference in the world. Plus it was really great to see dogs work as good as those do together and honoring each other. Each dog had its role to play.

I filleted 18 breasts last night. They made 6 good sealed packages of tenders.

Love hunting pheasant! Looks like a great time.
Whether you think you can or you can't, you are probably right.
