Rest and Ice. Try spinning equipment,it changes the stress. Pitch it. You need to fish the lightest rods and reels you can afford. I have a doctor's note instructing me to fish only Steez/GLX combinations. Rest and ice, rest and ice. Geez..And to think, how did we manage to survive all those years when the only choices were Ambassadeur 5500's and fiberglass rods? Talk about a heavy combo to toss all day, lol.. And finally those Skyline Graphite rods came out and saved the day.. Wait, we still had the 5500's on them too. As noted, rest is the best option.

Depends on the severity...my right elbow is very weak so I cannot use spinning gear...if I do I am down for a month...left elbow can get testy...when it does I have a tennis elbow strap that has a extra cushion that presses against that tendon...releives the stress and after wearing it for 3-4 days fishing or not...I feel much better.
Strap...Ibuprofen...icy hot...stretching it out as well...
It sucks getting old.

Using both hands instead of one to cast helped me.

I developed a pretty bad case years ago frog fishing and it still comes back at times. Wear the brace everyone is talking about and buy some alternate handed reels. I have 2 lefties that I keep just for this and take them with me on multi-day trips. Tylenol is good too but you need to take it before you get to the lake to keep the inflamation down. There is also an exercise to stretch it out before you get to the lake. 1. Stick your arm straight out with your elbow locked and make a fist. 2. turn your fist straight down at a 90 degree angle with your wrist. 3. Rotate your arm clockwise and counterclockwise repeated as far as you can to stretch out the tendons.

Proper stretching before you fish is crucial!! It will pay big time to do your research on stretching, and do it religiously before you fish. This goes for the whole body to help with the unique fatigue that a long day of fishing will put on the body. I stretch before, during, and after. If I didn't, I couldn't make it. The Wild Turkey helps also....

I had it a few years ago just the way you describe. Not fishing was not an option for me. So I started icing my elbow, taking ibuprofen, doing stretches on my arms, and wearing a tennis elbow wrap. And I also went from using only left hand reels, to also using right hand reels. Talk about being awkward till I got used to fishing with right hand reels. But I got rid of it within just a few weeks. I still have to wear a brace and I make sure to use both left and right hand reels.

Sorry to hear that.. I had to flat out back off fishing for a couple months, then ease back into it. It was hard, but winter time made it a little easier.. The joint and surrounding tissues need time to heal, plain and simple.
I tried all the wraps,cremes,bracelets,braces..etc.. After all that it was still unbearable, I made the decision to rest it and heal up.. It worked..
JM2C's
This is all that worked for me mine had gotten much better in the last month of no fishing to speak of. Mine went from above the elbow into the thumb. Got so bad I was eating 8-10 advil a day even when not fishing. Tough thing about a elbow is that is hard to rest. I ran the weed eater a couple weeks ago and could barely hold a fork to eat dinner afterwards. A day of throwing cranks or big c rigs really gets it going.

Appreciate all the good advice. Will use the brace I have more. Been using it some when fishing, but may have to wear every day. Will try the ice. Up to 2 alleve a day with not much relief. Maybe a little rest, no more honey do's instead of giving up fishing.

I had tennis elbow from lifting weights a lot. It hurt so bad I could barely lift my arm. What I did, and its a long recovery process......get you a light dumbell. Maybe 2-5lbs do half a curl in the pain free range of you elbow bend. This may be from you arm straight down to your side to a 90 degree angle. Do these reps about 30 times and do them quick. Next do them in the range of motion that is painfull. It wil hurt some, do them fast as well. As you tendon warms up they should become less painfull. Do two or three sets of these daily. Remember to do them fast. The speed and light weight allows the tendon to get a workout more then the bicep. If the tendon starts to hurt during the day a quick workout will usually relieve the pain.
DONT get a cortizone shot. For this to work you need to be able to feel when the pain begins to naturally subside. It make take a few weeks it may take a few months. As the pain disappears move to heavier weight but still fast reps. Eventually you will feel no more pain. Also if you dont already, start taking lots of fish oil and/or flaxseed oil. I prefer the Barleans brand of both in pill form. Both offer natural lubricants to the joints and tendons, important as you get older.
Now you obviously dont have to follow this but I like to think I know a little about what Im talking about. I used to powerlift and these type of injuries are common. People just dont like to fix things properly, they just want immediate results. Also these type of injuries dont respond well to rest. Ibuprofen will help with swelling and pain, dont wrap the arm, but you can ice it. Hope this helps.

I have this right now in my left elbow...I am right handed, hurts so freaking bad.
I have not fished most of the year, I had it so bad sore at the end of last year and earlier this spring and it still has not healed.
Icing and everything.
I feel for you.
Whether you think you can or you can't, you are probably right.
