I have a 2000 Yamaha VMAX 150, and I'm overdue for replacing the impeller. I live in The Colony, and work in Plano (near Plano Marine). I called Plano Marine, and to replace it would be around $180. Is that a reasonable price? I'm semi mechanically inclined, and have swapped out an impeller on a 60 HP Johnson outboard (with some help) before. Would I be taking a chance doing my VMAX by myself? Are there cheaper places to get it done? Thanks in advance.

That's in the ballpark........ maybe 20-30 dollars high ........... just call sveral other marine repair shops. Tommy or Opti on this forum can give you a fair price.

You can do it yourself! Just buy a new impeller at Plano Marine since they carry Yamaha. Put a little vaseline or petroleum jelly on the impeller when you go to twist it in the "cup" or holder and turn the shaft. Remember which way the old impeller came out...it is easy to do. Hook up your speedometer line...won't take you but a minute and will save you a lot of money. If it doesn't work, you can always spend your money at Plano Marine. cmeans

Is the impeller difficult to change on a Johnson GT150? also, I do have a friend that does work on outboards and only charges actual cost for parts (no markup) and $10 per hour. He does a great job, but he is on the east side of Lake Lavon.

I'm in the same boat with a 96 Mercury 200. I think it looks easy enough. But then again, I'm fairly sure that I could screw up a rock fight. I would love to have someone that has done it before show me or let me watch them do this just once. I already have the impeller from Plano marine and would pay them for their time and effort.

Hell...pretty much everything is "easy" to do if you know what you are doing in the first place.

Just have mine done by a TFF Boatman31. On time and as quoted, very good pricing.

Most shops charge by the flat rate book which is 2 hrs labor plus parts. It will depend on the shop rate of the dealer you take it to. The impellers usually run between 21-35 dollars. I am not sure what the Yahama impeller cost but the one for the OMC's is $33.95. Mecury impeller run $21.95. The change out on Yahamas and Mecury is pretty simple. The change out on OMCs is a little more involved as you have to disconnect the shift rod under the carbs. Let me know if I can help you.
