I'm looking for a frog setup(for horny toad fishing...).
I am tired of losing fish because either (1) my 6.2:1 reel ratio isn't fast enough to catch up to a fish who runs straight at me or (2) my 6'6" rod doesn't take up enough line on the hookset when they run at me or (3) my rod doesn't have the backbone to pull them out of slop.
Looking back just in 2011 I lost some good fish in tournaments all because they ran at me and I couldn't catch up with them to set the hook. That's one thing I'm gonna change for 2012.
So I'm looking for a rod 7' or more with a strong backbone but fast tip for casting, and a reel that takes up >30" line per crank, probably over 7:1 ratio.
Not looking to break the bank either.
I currently throw primarily Shimano reels and Falcon rods, but I also have some Castaways, BPS, All-Star.
Thanks guys. I'm not in any hurry and will probably pull the trigger over Christmas or at a tackle show in January.

I use a 7 ft heavy action all star with a 7.1:1 reel and 65lb power pro .I love it . I'm a really big frog fisherman and with out a stout rod and a fast reel to get those big girls out you're gonna have problems.

We build a great 7'3 frog rod with strong micros. I primarily throw black horny toads. I also use revo sx 7:1:1with 50-65lb braid. Our custom rods are extremely light and wont wear you down throwing it all day. Pm if interested or even curious about how it works.

check out shockwave rods. Bobby can build you pretty much anything but a 7'6" to 8' will handle pretty much any bass out there. matched up with 65-80lb braid and a top quality reel. check out the tommy martin series and the speedy collett series too

I use a 7'6 Heavy original Carrot Stix paired with an E7 Curado with 40-60lb braid. The other rod I may use is my Custom Angle Moby Bass 7'0 XH Mag.

I use a 7 ft Abu Veritas MH paired with an Abu STX 7:1. It has that tip you are looking for to launch that toad yet more than enough rear end to get um out of the trash. The rod is affordable but the reel is pricey. There are many other reels that will do the job at a more affordable price just make sure they are 7:1 or better.

a 7.6h Duckett will do the trick....I use to toss a cara reaction T7 but i found the Duckett more balanced and the tip was faster....The sensitivity overall was alot touchier as well....If you are interested let me know..Thanks.

Try our 7'XH Magnum Moby Bass Series rod for soft plastic frogs. Throws great, and fantastic hook setting power paired with any of the top end 7:1 or better reels

I have a couple set-ups because I often use both a hollow body and a solid body the same day. The reels are Ambassadeur 4600C4's, both with 65# Suffix 832. The rods are American Eagles which are out of production. They are both heavy actions, one is 7'3" and one is 7'6". They do the job well.
