I have a evinrude 150 that is "cold natured ". The first time to crank it after it sets for a few weeks, it will spin over until it just starts to fire and the starter disengages. It usually takes about 10 min or more of this until it cranks. I feel it would crank right up if it would spin over a time or two more. The starter isn't weak or slow. After it cranks the first time it fires right up every time. If this is normal for the starter to disengage is there any way to bypass it?

Starter bendix is suppose to release, when motor rpm gets greater than starter rpm. Bendex can be weak but it should`nt take that long to start your motor. All carbed outboards are differant to start. Try chokeing untill it try`s to start, indent to release shift or raise warm up bar to increase throttle, crank without chokeing, should start. Just be shure fuel bulb is pump up firm. Old or wrong spark plugs and timing can cause cold start problems also. good luck

Anglin, here is what to do.
1. Some Evinrudes have a "quickstart" cycle that automatically warms the engine. Hold the key in for at least a count of TEN before cranking. Keep the fuel handle in neutral apply more chock to keep it running.
2. Make sure you have clean carbs and good sparkplugs. On Evinrudes you will have better performance with Champion sparkplugs see your motor manual for correct type.
3. Make sure the carbs have been set up properly by a certified mechanic and that the timing is set right.
4. Use fresh fuel- or stabilize if the engine will setup for more than 2-3 weeks. Be sure bulb is pumped up hard before you crank it. I personally always use 89 octane but most engines should run OK on 87 octane. Why do I use 89 ? Because modern fuels lose octance rating the longer they are stored.......... so after several months the 89 might be closer to 87 octane.

Fuel bulb is firm, I am currently using new champion plugs, the carbs were rebuild earlier this year, and I assume set up. I'm running 89 octane. How could I check for a weak bendex And one last question.. when warm what should the Idle RPMs be in neu, and in gear? think it might be set a little high. If I remember correctly there at around 1000 in neu. and around 600 in gear. Thanks for all the help!

Your idle is a little to high. I have seen Tommy and Opti recommend 650-750 as idle RPM

Work the bendix up and down and spray shaft with wd40....... your symptoms don't sound like a defective solenoid which would not raise it high enough to engage the flywheel........ a low battery will also cause the solenoid not to engage the flywheel........ but yours is engaging.
