SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - The search for two men on an East Texas Lake has turned into a recovery effort, according to Game Warden, Captain Clint Balkcom.

Crews will be back on Lake Palestine between 7:30 and 8:00 am to start a recovery effort for two men who disappeared while on a fishing trip Wednesday.

64-year-old, Tommy Cook of Overton went fishing with his uncle yesterday and around 8:45 last night, family and friends called authorities because the men had not come home.

DPS officials say the men had been out on Lake Palestine all day near the Villages Marina, which is located off of FM 2661.

A search was conducted last night utilizing an ETMC helicopter, but that search was called off around 2:00 am, because of low temperatures and because of the amount of time that had already lapsed since the men were reported missing, according to Captain Clint Balkcom.

A DPS helicopter is expected to be out this morning helping with the recovery effort, weather permitting.

KLTV is following this developing story and will have the latest information as it becomes available. Check back to KLTV.com often for updates.

(For the last couple of hours i've been hearing and seeing a helicopter out over the lake. Prayers going out to the family's of these two men.)

UPDATE: According to DPS, one of the fisherman missing since yesterday evening has been found alive, clinging to stump. According to DPS, 61-year-old, Mike Ammons was found alive and is now at a Tyler hospital in good condition. The search helicopter saw what looked like blue jeans on a stump. Mike Ammons told officials the boat filled with water and went under. He is the father of a DPS Trooper.
The body of 64-year-old, Tommy Cook of Overton was recovered from the water deceased.

Not sure of the exact number of people that
have died on Palestine over the last 20 years.
Perhaps 9. Seems most were in flatbottom boats
or smaller metal boats. Seems that most were
north of the 155 bridge.

Does anyone know the cause of death? I'm assuming hyperthermia? I'm just curious becuase they said he didn't drown. I have a small boat too and try to learn as much as I can from things like this.

Wear your PFD. Makes it so much easier to find the body.
