A touring WWII B-17 bomber named ALUMINUM OVERCAST came to Spinks Airport in Burleson, TX. Theres only about 12 flyable B-17s left in the world thats still air worthy. These aircraft are extremely expensive to operate and maintain. After going on-board and looking this old magnificent war bird over, then you start to realize and appreciate just how brave and courageous these young boys where that flew them during WWII a lot of them where still in high school and even some of them lied about their own age just to get in the war back then, These planes werent even pressurized, and they were cramped. No wonder they are called the Greatest generation. This generation is rapidly dying away, and soon will go silent. So if one of these old war birds shows up at your citys airport, go and take your kids or grand kids to see it! And tell them about the history about plane and the men who flew them. In truth we have always had boys like this through the wars that followed WWII, even unto this day, these boys today are fighting a different type of enemy, an enemy that wants to blow us up and force a religion and a different way of life down our throats. So God bless the men and women that serve in the US. Military. flag

Nice photos, those warbirds are beautiful classics.

Martin Caidin had a book about the Flying Fortress that I read years and years ago. It detailed the development and wartime use of the B-17, lots of good tales in the book.

Wow That is something to consider! My dad was a bombadier on one during WW2. He told me some crazy stories one night before he passed.
I will at least go see it up close. Thanks for sharing

Great pictures. She's a classic alright, and the stories of the B-17 missions during WW II are amazing. The crews truly were testiment to the fact that they were of the greatest generation.

She just flew over my house as I was putting the boat up. My son and I got a good look. There is nothing like the sound of radial engines.

Thanks so much for posting these pictures and the commentary. Sacrifice for a larger cause is indeed a dying virtue for many in our country.

Cool!!
Fishing last Tuesday at Lake Athens, heard what we thought was a loud boat coming from behind....was a WWII Corsair maybe 150' off water!!! Loved it!

Fishing is not a matter of life or death,
it's much more important than that!

I saw 2 vintage C-47 aircraft come over the house this afternoon at Matlock and I-20 in Arlington flying to the southwest. They even had allied D-day stripe pattern on the wings and fuselage. Pretty cool!

My Dad was a navigator on a B-17G in WWII. He flew out of Chelviston, England. They leveled Berlin and North Africa in 44' and 45'.
His stories were amazing to say the least! flag

Cheers,

George

Thats for sharing. You'd have to be crazy not to like an old Warbird. $475 for a once in a lifetime chance to fly in that plane would be awesome. I bet it's a short ride, those things drink the fuel!!!
