Pipe Dope

I joined two 1/2" brass male fittings with a 3" long collar while installing a bathroom shower faucet.I don't know what kind of metal the collar is made from, but it looks to be zinc plated. After hooking things up, I have a tiny water seep from around the collar that I cannot get rid of. I've tried both Teflon tape and liquid Teflon. I think my problem is that I cannot get the fittings perfectly dry before using the sealant. What should I try next?

Do you have to use three fittings? Can you use a connection like those used on hot water heaters or under the sink? Some type of flexible braided line.

If you have to use those brass fittings, make sure it's all dry. Use teflon tape, about 4-6 wraps. Hand tighten, then at least one turn with a wrench. The drip is due to not being tight enough. And they are frustrating.

This morning it had gone from a drip to kind of like condensation on a bottle of wine. I had to use 3 connections because the hardware store didn't have the correct one and I had to Southern engineer. I'm thinking the fact that the liquid Teflon is about 30
years old might have something to do with the seep.

This morning it had stopped leaking, so all is well. Thanks for the advice. The tips about the wet seal and the Rectorseal t+2 will be remembered.
