I caught this on Pines Monday. It's the biggest one I've caught this year. It measured 22 1/2" and by my cheap azz scale it showed just over 5#. I looked at a conversion scale and a bass of that length shows to be 6.89#. Now if I'm gonna brag about this one what weight would use?
I can do better---I just never have.

Its pretty thin and long, but none the less, a nice pines bass. Just say it was somewhere between 5 and 6. BTW... I know your secret spot now... you didnt black out the background like those jacks in the catfish forum!

I thought the same also, When it first jumped my first thought was 6+ until I got it in the boat. I guess it was so hungry it would fall for anything thrown it's way.

I think your scale is probably about right. Nice Fish.
When you look at a length/weight chart it is showing you what an ideal/100% weight is for the length. This time of year it would be hard to hit 100% on a lot of fish.

Those conversion charts are assuming the fish is in perfect health their close but not always accurate.
What I would do is over shoot your weight by about 3 lbs, just to see the responses you'll get from everyone, loL.

Don't know if you measured the girth, but the weight calculators use the girth of the fish as well as the length. Most fish weight calculators assume a length to girth ratio of about 1.7 for an average bass. But that ratio doesn't hold very well for fatter or skinnier fish. I caught one a few years ago that was 22 1/2" long and went 7.4 lb., so 6.9lb. is very reasonable for that length in my opinion. Spring-type mechanical scales get off easily; digital scales are more reliable in general.
In memory of my childhood friend Dan Sterling, who taught me at an early age how to catch bream with a hand-line, and who unknowingly hooked me on fishing for life.

I had a fish this weekend in a tournament when deciding to cull the 15 3/4 was heavier than the 17 inch fish . Texas parks and wildlife shows a way to make sure your scales are accurate most of the berkley electric scales I've used are about 3oz off.

There is not a scale made that i would trust for culling. To me its balance beam only. Its fast and easy and never has a dead battery.
