On Saturday October 22nd, I got the privilege of doing another "Day On the Water" with TFF'er Evan Vidal aka Bassin' TitaN.
With the drought conditions and time of year I wanted to choose a lake that would challenge Evan, but would also reward him for any hard work and good decisions he would make.
After looking over many lakes I decided on a small North Texas Lake located in Dallas, Texas, called White Rock Lake.
White Rock lake is a small 1,088 acre lake with a max depth of 20 feet. It has a special motor restriction that only allows up a 9.9-horsepower limit on boat motors; anglers may use electric trolling motors. This it's self makes it a long day to navigate and locate fish when just out fun fishing, little on have 5 hours to locate fish and catch them with a camera in your face and a guy in the back of the boat picking your brain all day.
That's what Evan agreed to and so that's what happen to him on this day that Evan had 1000's of spectators and fans..
After driving and weaving my way around the lake and the 1000's of runners getting ready and participating in a marathon, I met Evan at the Lawther road ramp.
He was accompanied by his dad Eric, who most of you know. Evan gets a few minor adjustments done to the boat and Eric launches us in to he 66 degree water with Air temps just above 60 degrees.
We troll in the cove at the ramp for a second while it's still just a little to early for the camera, but after about 5 minutes of that Evan wants to hit a main lake Bank and Point he studied on. We make our way to the bank that is loaded with all types of grasses, rocks and Lay downs and he begins his day.
Doesn't take long for Evan to hook into a small bass around some grass and he lands the fish with some fans cheering him on.
Evan is using a Deps Spiral Minnow to land the first fish.
About 30 minutes after Evan lands his first fish he notices that for some reason his trolling motor is running slow and bumps it up to 100%, no luck the trolling motor keeps running like it's only on 40-50% but that doesn't stop Evan from attacking his game plan. He spends the next hour or so sticking to his bank plan and doesn't sniff but a bite here and there. He works over a brush pile that's 50 yards off the bank in 4-5 feet of water and still no luck.
After having no luck the first part of the day I ask Evan whats his plans going forward and what his thought process is. To this point to be honest he's hanging in there and fishing hard but is struggling to get fish to bite and in the boat.
Evan makes his way back around the ramp and decides to start flipping some grass in the murky water where we launched. He noticed that the main lake has clearer water and he wasn't getting the bites he wanted.
We spend about 10 minutes around the ramp when Evan Flips into the heart of some grass and gets a fish to chase the bait on his retrieve back. He flips back into the grass and gets that great Felling of Thump. He reels down and sets the hook only to have the fish he's been waiting for for a hour, get off.
He switches things up a little and goes to Blue Colored Berkley Havoc.. and flips back into some grass just over the cove a small ways..
Evan fishes all the grass located on that stretch of bank and goes back to the Spiral Minnow to fish the open water till the next patch of grass. As soon as we hit the next clump.....
We make our way around the point of the cove and pull up to some old but really cool boat slips. Evan keeps flipping the Havoc trying to get a bite in the shade of the slips since the Sun is now high and the air temp is rising, water temp still remained at 66-67 .
After flipping each of the first 4 stalls with no luck he pulls up to number 5 and well.......
And No Evan I didn't get the camera over in time to see the fish...Sorry Bud, guess you won't land a chunk today,,,,,OR Will You????
Evan spends a good amount of time picking about the slips and a near by Bridge, with no luck, He keeps telling me he wants to hit the dam and we start making our way that direction......But first he wants to stop and hit a dock near another boat ramp.
Evan doesn't have any luck on the Dock but I did....
YEP took me all day but I got it....
We make our way to the Dam and even goes to a crank and starts casting down the concrete over pour of the dam......AND this is where the ole saying NEVER GIVE UP comes from...
After a long day of having to work his butt off for bites Evans last location and attempt to put some fish in the boat pays off....BIG TIME...
Evan got into a school of bass and flat wore them out, I didn't even post all the fish from there as it was getting old watching him whack one after another....LOL
Well after about a hour of smacking bass on the Dam the bite shut off and I gave Evan the notice of 5 minutes....
We go ahead and shoot the Closing video so we can make the long Trolling Idle back to the ramp....
As you saw in the video Evan bites off his crank and was going to tie on another when he decides to grab a rod from his rod locker and throw a work on a jig head.
What happens next hasn't happened on any of the "Day On The Water" video's if I remember right. He makes a few cast then makes a last cast, I tell him that time is up and its the last cast.....a few Seconds later.......
Yep biggest bass of the day, not a Giant, but on a tough day on White Rock Lake it was....
I had a blast getting to spend the day with Evan and watching how he would attack a lake he hasn't seen in a while, it's fun to watch how anglers think in fishing punches them in the mouth with a tough day, and how there game plane changes....Evan changed his for the Better and turned a VERY SLOW day in to a VERY PRODUCTIVE day by staying focused and keeping his thoughts straight and clear.
Great Job Evan
Here is a funny Video we shot near the Dock that Evan back Lashed ON....
